Job Description
The Multimedia Designer actively collaborates and engages with instructional designers and the content production team to build engaging educational course content for online courses. The multimedia designer focuses on the student’s visual experience and determines how a student interfaces with interactive course content. The Multimedia Designer must have a proven understanding of effective multimedia integration in teaching and learning, visual design and UI design principles for web applications, and e-learning authoring tools, as well as the ability to thrive within a fast‑paced, collaborative environment. This position requires regular on‑campus presence and occasional schedule flexibility, including evenings and weekends based on student and operational needs. Staff operate in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment supporting non‑traditional learners through an evolving, data‑informed model.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree required; in Graphic Design, Multimedia Design, Instructional Technology, Learning Experience Design, or a related field.

1+ years of industry experience in UI design.

Skills and Knowledge

Proven work experience as a Graphic Designer or similar role.

Ability to demonstrate effective communication skills (written/verbal), including presentation skills.

Ability to demonstrate proven visual design/development skills and industry‑standard platform/OS experience.

Demonstrate ability to create design concepts and prototypes using industry standard tools such as Illustrator and After Effects, as well as have knowledge of Premiere and Photoshop.

Familiarity with post‑production processes considered favorably. Ability to create and refine prototypes, wireframes, flow diagrams, and user‑requirement documents.

Ability to prepare and present design recommendations based on program goals, user research, UX/UI principles, and an understanding of the regulatory requirements of higher education.

Ability to participate in design and feedback sessions and generate design recommendations.

Proven ability to prioritize and handle multiple assignments simultaneously while maintaining a positive outlook and a collegial, professional demeanor.

Strong understanding of responsive UI design principles to deliver products across multiple platforms, including desktop, web, and mobile.

A high degree of creativity, interaction design, and problem‑solving skills.

Responsibilities

Create engaging, visually pleasing, and easy‑to‑understand graphics and animations to enhance online course material.

Employ a learner‑centered design methodology to create, prototype, develop, and validate accessible user interface designs, including page layouts and navigation for desktop, web‑based, and mobile delivery of online course material.

Conceptualize e‑learning interface design ideas through the use of storyboards, process flows, mockups and prototypes.

Collaborate with instructional designers and production team to conceptualize, define, prioritize, and build online courses.

Leverage your product, interaction, and visual design skills to create engaging experiences that empower learners.

Design products with a focus on Accessibility, and partnering with designers, developers, and testers to create accessible instructional content.

Utilize e‑learning authoring tools to design interactive learning solutions.

Manage intake and organization of digital assets throughout the course development process.

Help create a positive and supporting team environment.

Interact with various functional team members to support their UI application needs.

Develop user interface design standards and best practices for online courses that adhere to Syracuse University’s digital style guide and standards of excellence.

Research user needs, develop personas, perform task analysis, and craft and conduct interviews to create industry‑leading user experiences for online courses.

Realize new learning experiences based on user insights and product goals.
