Overview
The University of Central Missouri is expanding its philanthropic development and alumni programs. The Director of Development advances the Alumni Foundation vision of transforming the lives of UCM students and creating opportunities for them beyond what they imagined possible through fundraising for UCM's academic programs and college initiatives. This director will serve as a productive fundraising professional and an excellent ambassador of the University of Central Missouri.
Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities (90%)
Represent
the entire University of Central Missouri in visits with alumni and prospective donors; develop and maintain relationships with donors and prospects; present the case for support; be donor‑centered, listen well, and learn about their personal and philanthropic interests and goals; align the donor’s interests with the university’s fundraising priorities.
Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors and prospective donors to meet or exceed annual goals established by the VP for Advancement/AF Executive Director.
Travel at least 35% of the time to meet face‑to‑face with prospects.
Follow up quickly and professionally to solicit and secure gifts and pledges.
Meet and regularly communicate with all assigned donors and prospects each year.
For each assigned prospect, develop, write, and implement a solicitation strategy including planned actions, due dates, gift ask amount, fund/purpose, etc.; enter and update the strategy in the donor records system. Use appropriate documents such as written gift proposals, gift agreements, and gift illustrations during cultivation and solicitation.
Encourage donors to consider future support via planned gifts (will, trust, bequest, charitable remainder trust, charitable gift annuity, etc.) in addition to major gifts.
Follow Prospect Management System policies and procedures.
Write and submit contact reports for all substantive visits, phone calls, e‑mails, and correspondence in the donor records system.
Maintain up‑to‑date records of all planned, current, and completed gift solicitations in the donor records system.
Keep donor and prospect assignments current in the donor records system.
Meet fundraising financial goals and productivity metrics for substantive visits, phone calls, and gift solicitations/proposals.
Serve as the primary Development staff liaison to an assigned collegiate unit or other UCM unit/program; meet with the dean/director, department chairs, faculty, staff, etc., to identify fundraising priorities and giving
aming opportunities; share this information with the VP/Executive Director and Development staff.
Coordinate and communicate effectively with the VP/Executive Director, development colleagues, and other University Advancement Office staff.
Secondary Responsibilities (10%)
Attend University Advancement staff meetings when not traveling.
Attend donor and alumni events to meet with donors and prospects.
Be accountable for assigned budget; spend responsibly and frugally.
Be proficient in the use of the donor records system.
Perform other duties and projects as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
Education
• Bachelor’s degree in any field of study required.
• Master’s degree in Business, Marketing, Public Relations, Not‑for‑Profit Management, Communications, or a related field preferred.
Experience
• Minimum of five years of full‑time work experience.
• Preferred: At least three years of successful experience in fundraising, sales, public relations, communications, etc.
• Preferred: Experience traveling regionally and nationally.
• Desired attributes:
1. Ability to solicit and close major gifts and pledges (five, six, and seven‑figure amounts).
2. Ability to present a compelling case for support and persuade individuals to make charitable contributions.
3. Friendly personality, professional presence and appearance, excellent conversation skills, and a willingness to travel and meet new people.
4. Trustworthy and reliable, excellent verbal and writing skills, well organized, attentive to detail, timely in following up with donors and prospects, and a team player.
