Position Summary
The Public Services Specialist I performs a variety of reference, reader’s advisory, and directional services. Assists patrons with general computer and technology inquiries, collaborates with supervisors to recommend, develop, implement, and evaluate library programs and events for all ages, and conducts outreach services. Performs administrative, organizational, and clerical duties that promote library programs and services under the supervision and direction of a supervisor.

Essential Functions

Performs reference, reader’s advisory, interlibrary loan, and directional services for the public in a timely manner.

Provides instruction to patrons in the use of all the library’s print and technology resources and services.

Assists patrons with general computer inquiries and technology assistance.

Prepares and promotes marketing and social media materials about library programs and services; creates displays and decorates spaces and bulletin boards as assigned.

Uses library equipment, technology, and online resources as appropriate.

Maintains clean and orderly public spaces and shared work areas; performs roving duties on each floor.

Prepares, performs, and evaluates informational, recreational, and educational programming for all age groups as requested.

Accepts and performs general duties and special projects assigned by the department.

Keeps supervisor and designated others accurately informed about work progress and problems; suggests new or improved ways of addressing issues.

Responds to patrons’ questions and comments professionally, courteously, and promptly.

Communicates and coordinates with staff, library partners, and others to maximize the efficacy and efficiency of library operations and activities.

Meets performance requirements, including attendance standards, professional behavior, and deadlines.

Communicates information and concerns clearly and professionally.

Respects the opinions of others and demonstrates a reasonable relationship with employees, supervisors, and others.

Assumes PIC (Person in Charge) for evening and weekend shifts as needed, addressing safety concerns and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Assists in staff training and demonstrations.

Performs collection development responsibilities, including selection, weeding, inventory, and ordering of materials.

Performs routine opening and closing procedures.

Follows city and library policies and procedures; explains rules to patrons and resolves complaints with diplomacy and tact.

Fields telephone inquiries from the public and directs calls appropriately.

Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions; reviews library publications to stay current on practice.

Assists with program supply, information desk care, and organization as needed.

Completes departmental and program reports; assists with grant and other writing assignments as needed.

Collects departmental and library statistics.

Prepares and disseminates promotional materials for library programs and services.

Accommodates changes in work assignments and processes promptly and effectively.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, & Certifications

High school graduate or GED required.

Associate’s degree in library science, information management, or related field, or 2–4 years of relevant experience in a library, educational, or customer-facing environment required. Equivalent combinations considered.

Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Bilingual preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of library functions, rules, policies, and procedures.

Knowledge of library materials and resources, including print and electronic reference sources.

Basic computer operations in a professional or office setting.

Ability to use library equipment, including computer, copier, and related technology.

Ability to plan, design, direct, deliver, and evaluate programs to meet patron needs.

Problem‑solving using diplomatic resolution strategies.

Ability to work independently and provide assistance to patrons.

Organizational and prioritization skills.

Physical ability to manipulate objects among shelves and on carts.

Effective oral and written communication, both technical and non‑technical.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written policies, procedures, and instructions.

Accuracy and speed under time‑sensitive deadlines.

Willingness to learn new skills and knowledge rapidly.

Must successfully pass City of Nampa background checks and drug testing procedures.

Work Environment
Primarily performed in a general library environment; may involve outside conditions during outreach or programming.

Essential Physical Abilities

Finger dexterity sufficient for operating computer, telephone, and related equipment.

Clear speech for effective communication.

Clear hearing for normal conversations and receiving information.

Adequate visual acuity to review materials, view computer terminal, read, inspect small parts.

Physical strength and mobility sufficient for maneuvering, walking, standing, and handling up to 20 lbs.
