Job Overview
We seek a Managing Editor of The Cincinnati Review, a top‑tier international literary journal based in the English Department at the University of Cincinnati. The Managing Editor works alongside the Senior Editor and the Web and Media Editor, overseeing the production of two print/digital issues per year. This mentorship‑heavy position includes the recruitment, hiring, and supervision of graduate‑level editors, undergraduate co‑op students, and/or interns. The candidate must have excellent organizational skills, mentorship experience, and the ability to liaise with institutional departments, faculty, and community members. Mastery of copyediting prose and poetry using the Chicago Manual of Style is required, demonstrated through a copyediting test.
Essential Functions
Manages three graduate‑student editors during the academic year and a fourth during the summer term, recruited and hired in consultation with the Senior Editor and Web and Media Editor.
Communicates with the Senior Editor and Web and Media Editor about duties and task overlap.
Liaises with department business administrators, department heads, and external university offices about needs.
Participates in departmental and university‑wide training.
Liaises with vendors and purchases & manages all office supplies.
Manages payments to contributors and handles associated paperwork.
Manages a production schedule for the journal.
When time allows, reads submissions and either rejects or forwards them to genre editors/teams.
Copy edits accepted pieces based on the Chicago Manual of Style, the house dictionary, and the house style guide, and sends the edits to writers for review.
Prepares a master document for the typesetter, manages copyediting sessions, and coordinates with the mailing service to distribute copies of the journal to subscribers.
Prepares accessible e‑book PDF versions of each issue.
Applies for awards and grants on behalf of the journal.
Co‑ordinates, with the Web and Media Editor, the journal’s presence at the AWP national conference.
Assists the Web and Media Editor in providing website content, planning assigned tasks for editors, curating the miCRo series, and creating social media posts.
Works with the Web and Media Editor on local and virtual events.
Required Education
Bachelor’s Degree in English Composition, Professional Writing, Creative Writing, or a related field.
Eight (8) years of relevant work experience and/or specialized training can be used in lieu of the education requirement.
Required Experience
Four (4) years of relevant experience reviewing and editing documents, articles, books, etc. prior to publication.
Additional Qualifications Considered
Knowledge of literary‑magazine or creative‑writing publishing.
Master’s or doctoral degree in creative writing.
Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, Adobe Suite, Canva, and WordPress.
Mastery of copyediting both prose and poetry using the Chicago Manual of Style, demonstrated through a copyediting test.
Excellent communication skills.
Self‑motivated and eager to learn new things.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize responsibilities successfully.
