University of Cincinnati seeks a Managing Editor for The Cincinnati Review, a top‑tier international literary journal in the English Department. The role involves overseeing the production of two print/digital issues per year, providing mentorship to graduate‑level editors and undergraduate interns, and collaborating with the Senior Editor and Web & Media Editor on journal operations.

Essential Functions

Manager of graduate‑student editors—recruiting, hiring, and supervising three editors during the academic year and an additional editor in the summer term.

Coordinating duties and task overlap with the Senior Editor and Web & Media Editor.

Communicating with department business administrators, department heads, external university offices, and vendors regarding departmental needs and journal requirements.

Participating in departmental and university‑wide training sessions.

Purchasing and managing office supplies, processing payments to contributors, and handling associated paperwork.

Managing the journal’s production schedule.

Reviewing manuscript submissions, making decisions on acceptance or rejection, and forwarding submissions to appropriate genre editors.

Copyediting accepted pieces in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style, the journal’s house dictionary, and style guide, and sending edits back to authors.

Preparing master documents for typesetting, coordinating copyediting sessions, and liaising with mailing services for subscription distribution.

Creating accessible e‑book PDF versions of each issue.

Applying for awards and grants on behalf of the journal.

Coordinating the journal’s presence at the AWP national conference with the Web & Media Editor.

Assisting with website content, curating the miCRo series, and creating social media posts, as well as planning local and virtual events.

Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree in English Composition, Professional Writing, Creative Writing, or a related field.

Eight (8) years of relevant work experience and/or specialized training may substitute for the education requirement.

Required Experience
Four (4) years of relevant experience reviewing and editing documents, articles, books, etc. before publication.

Additional Qualifications Considered

Experience in literary‑magazine or creative‑writing publishing.

Master’s or doctoral degree in creative writing.

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, Adobe Suite and/or Canva, and WordPress.

Mastery of copyediting prose and poetry using the Chicago Manual of Style, demonstrated through an editing test.

Excellent communication skills.

Self‑motivation and eagerness to learn new skills.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently and prioritize responsibilities effectively.

Compensation and Benefits

Competitive salary range of $64,600 - $72,705, dependent on the candidate's experience and qualifications.
