Role Summary
The communications and marketing specialist serves as Wilson College’s primary editorial lead and steward, responsible for creating and managing high‑quality content that aligns with NC State’s brand and the dean’s strategic goals. This role translates complex research and technical textile processes into engaging narratives for a wide array of stakeholders, including prospective students, faculty and industry partners, and provides operational leadership by overseeing the college’s editorial standards and mentoring writing and marketing interns to ensure a unified and sophisticated brand voice.
Primary Duties
Independently researches and writes articles on complex technical topics, drafts leadership emails and manages strategic plans while enforcing formalized college‑wide editorial guidelines.
Selects optimal platforms for targeted audience engagement, analyzes the impact of communications on recruitment, and identifies growth opportunities in strategic planning and web analytics.
Implements web design principles to maintain college web pages, integrates new digital tools into the workflow and provides graphic design support to the multimedia specialist.
Directly oversees writing and marketing interns, providing technical instruction and ensuring all written output meets university standards.
Maintains a deep understanding of college operations to support leadership and handles sensitive information with discretion during critical events.
Other Responsibilities
Support the overall function of the OMC to raise awareness and understanding of Wilson College and drive growth in undergraduate and graduate admissions, audience engagement and industry leadership.
Support special events as needed.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience working within a university setting, particularly in a communications or marketing office, with a baseline understanding of academic structures.
Experience using Content Management Systems (e.g., WordPress) and familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop) for graphic design support.
Experience translating technical, scientific or grant‑funded research into “plain language” stories for the general public.
Experience leading student workers, interns or freelance contributors in a deadline‑driven environment.
