Job Summary

Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) is seeking an experienced Technical Director to lead audio production for a range of broadcast and live events. The role requires operating audio broadcast consoles, radio automation software, and post‑production tools such as ProTools and Adobe Audition. The Technical Director will collaborate with journalists, producers, hosts, and engineers across WPR’s statewide News and Music networks.

Schedule: Full‑time, core business hours Monday‑Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM with occasional nights and weekends. The primary location is the UW‑Madison campus in Madison, WI; some duties may be performed remotely, but fully remote candidates will not be accepted.

Physical requirement: ability to lift up to 50 pounds with occasional assistance.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Set up, adjust, link, operate, and troubleshoot complex audio/video equipment in various environments.
  • Lead system design and installation of broadcast, streaming, and post‑production technology.
  • Digitally record, edit, and finalize media in formats meeting station standards and FCC regulations.
  • Schedule logistics and act as station representative for remote production venues, ensuring technical specifications are met.
  • Test and maintain equipment, and recommend hardware and software upgrades to improve performance.
  • Serve as engineering lead for on‑ or off‑site productions as needed.
  • Train staff on equipment, procedures, and standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Prior experience with audio production and sound mixing in broadcast, live sound reinforcement, music recording, or post‑production environments.
  • Prior experience operating and programming digital and analog audio consoles.
  • Experience with digital audio workstation (DAW) software and hardware; Adobe Audition and ProTools strongly preferred.
  • Ability to diagnose technical problems and trace audio or data signal paths.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non‑technical staff.
  • Self‑directed, independent, and capable of working in teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced professional experience with ProTools audio production software.
  • Experience as audio lead for live in‑studio and remote broadcasts.
  • Experience with media asset management for file delivery, post‑production, and web archives.
  • Experience with Wide Orbit or similar radio automation software.
  • Strong organizational skills, multitasking, and rapid focus shifts while maintaining accuracy and detail.

Education

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field; Associate’s degree in Recording, Media Production, or a related field accepted.

Compensation

Salary range: $62,000 to $70,000, dependent on experience and qualifications.
