Job Summary

Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) seeks an experienced Technical Director to lead audio production for live and recorded broadcasts. The successful candidate will operate broadcast consoles, radio automation software, and audio production tools such as ProTools and Adobe Audition, collaborating with journalists, producers, hosts, and engineers across WPR’s statewide news and music networks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up, adjust, connect, operate, and troubleshoot complex audio and video equipment in studio and remote settings.
  • Lead system design and installation of broadcast, streaming, and post‑production technology.
  • Digitally record, edit, and finalize media in various formats in compliance with station standards and FCC regulations.
  • Schedule logistics and represent the station at remote production venues, ensuring technical specifications are met.
  • Test and maintain equipment, recommending hardware or software upgrades to enhance performance.
  • Serve as engineering team lead for on‑site or off‑site productions.
  • Train staff on equipment handling, procedures, and technical standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Prior experience with audio production and sound mixing in broadcast or live sound environments.
  • Proficiency with digital and analog audio consoles.
  • Experience with digital audio workstation (DAW) software and hardware, especially Adobe Audition and ProTools.
  • Ability to diagnose technical problems and trace audio and data signal paths.
  • Strong communication skills for conveying technical information to non‑technical staff.
  • Self‑directed, able to work independently and within teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced proficiency with ProTools audio production software.
  • Experience as an audio lead for live in‑studio and remote broadcasts.
  • Experience with media asset management for file delivery, post‑production, and web archives.
  • Experience with WideOrbit or similar radio automation software.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to multitask and shift focus quickly while maintaining accuracy.

Education

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field; Associate’s Degree in Recording, Media Production, or a similar area.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $62,000 – $70,000, depending on experience and qualifications.

Working Hours and Location

Full‑time, Monday–Friday 8:00AM–5:00PM. On‑site work at the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus is required; limited remote work for editing or other assigned tasks is possible under a flexible work arrangement (FWA). Candidates must possess reliable high‑speed internet and phone for remote work using a university‑provided computer.
