Job Description
The ideal candidate will play a key role in developing user-centered, plain-language content that simplifies complex government information and improves accessibility for New York City residents. This role requires close collaboration with multiple NYC agencies, stakeholders, and digital teams to create guided digital experiences aligned with NYC web standards and usability goals.
The selected candidate will report directly to the Lead Digital Strategist and contribute to high-impact redesign and modernization efforts for NYC.gov services.
Key Responsibilities
Develop content requirements, structures, and outlines for guided digital experiences across NYC.gov
Write and edit clear, concise, plain-language web content aligned with NYC web content style guidelines
Conduct interviews with subject matter experts and stakeholders across various NYC agencies
Research city laws, government policies, regulations, and operational procedures to support accurate content development
Perform content audits and maintain inventories of existing website content and digital features
Analyze user behavior and website performance using Google Analytics and related reporting tools
Ensure timely delivery of high-quality content strategy deliverables
Conduct QA reviews for content workstreams and provide recommendations for improvements
Track KPIs, engagement metrics, and content performance indicators
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including UX, design, product, legal, and policy stakeholders
Required Qualifications
Minimum 8 years of experience as a Content Strategist, Editorial Strategist, Information Architect, or similar role
Strong copywriting, editing, and editorial skills with portfolio or writing samples
Experience writing content based on established style guides and editorial standards
Excellent research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
Strong stakeholder communication and collaboration experience
Experience coordinating meetings and working across multiple departments or teams
Strong project management and deadline management skills
Basic experience with Google Analytics and web traffic reporting
Experience leveraging user research and analytics to guide content strategy decisions
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Creative Writing, Digital Media, or related field
Prior experience working with government agencies, nonprofits, or higher education institutions
Experience writing plain-language content at a sub-7th grade reading level
Familiarity with modern Content Management Systems (CMS)
Experience handling complex approval workflows involving legal, executive, and policy stakeholders
Knowledge of NYC government systems and resident-facing public services
