Job Title
Managing Editor, Journals & Publications Editor (internal); Managing Editor of The 9th Street Journal (external)

Responsibilities

Content Development (40%)

Conceive and shape stories about Durham, its government, and the diverse people who live here, including news, features, profiles, video, and podcasts.

Consult with faculty on content plans.

Organize, supervise, and participate in the management and development of all reporting and production for publication.

Assign and advise reporting and photography staff; assist reporters with data and fact‑checking; line‑edit copy; and prepare content for publication.

Publish all content to the online content management system.

Teaching and Mentorship (40%)

Recruit, manage and mentor a team of students in their reporting and writing.

Oversee student photographers and harness other students’ interest to expand the site’s use of social media, podcasts, and data visualizations.

Teach one undergraduate course per academic year in the JAM curriculum.

Events and Community Building (5%)

Plan and execute community‑building events for the student reporting team.

Fundraising and Development (5%)

Raise supporting funds from individual donors, foundations, and grantmakers.

Maintain donor relations and communications, manage grant processes, and produce reports for funders.

Generate fundraising and promotional materials.

Other Duties (10%)

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Recent examples include creating and conducting listening sessions in the community.

What You’ll Bring

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor’s degree program.

Experience

Work requires 4 years of editorial experience in a publishing‑related setting or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The ability to manage and coordinate the production of a news site. Key competencies include news reporting, managing a journalist staff, editing, fact‑checking, news production, and mentorship.

Pay Range
USD $61,535.00 to USD $95,880.00 per year.
