Managing Editor, The 9th Street Journal
The Managing Editor of The 9th Street Journal coordinates all phases of editorial development and production of Duke’s student‑written local news site for the Durham community. The role involves editing, teaching, and mentoring students, and overseeing student journalists who report, write, and edit content for the site.

What You’ll Do

Conceive and shape stories about Durham, its government, and the diverse people who live here. Stories will be a mix of news, features, profiles, video, podcasts, and articles.

Consult with faculty on content plans.

Organize, supervise, and manage the reporting and production of all content for publication.

Assign and advise reporting and photography staff; assist reporters with data and fact‑checking; line‑edit copy; and prepare content for publication.

Publish all content to the online content management system.

Recruit, manage, and mentor a team of students in their reporting and writing.

Oversee student photographers and leverage other students’ interests to expand the site’s use of social media, podcasts, and data visualizations.

Teach one undergraduate course per academic year in the JAM curriculum.

Plan and execute community‑building events for the student reporting team.

Raise supporting funds from individual donors, foundations, and grantmakers; maintain donor relations and communications; manage grant processes; produce reports for funders; generate fundraising and promotional materials.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein, such as creating and conducting listening sessions in the community.

What You’ll Bring

Education / Training : Bachelor's degree with communication, analytical, and organizational focus.

Experience : Minimum four years of editorial experience in a publishing‑related setting, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Ability to manage and coordinate production of a news site; competencies in news reporting, staff management, editing, fact‑checking, news production, and mentorship.

Anticipated Pay Range
USD $61,535.00 to USD $95,880.00.
