Summary
As part of the Community and Government Relations team, the Program Manager plays a critical role in carrying out the department’s overall strategy for local and federal government relations and managing the University’s relationship with neighboring communities. The position supports dedicated events and programming that enhance AU’s connections with governmental stakeholders, District of Columbia social impact partners, and campus neighbors, and facilitates ongoing work of AU’s Neighborhood Partnership and Community Liaison Committee public meetings.
Responsibilities
- Neighborhood Partnership and Community Liaison Committee Meetings: coordinate AU’s 2021 Campus Plan and Strategic Plan initiatives by managing logistics of quarterly committee meetings, including event planning, room reservations, agenda development, slide deck preparation, event promotion, note‐taking, and follow‑ups.
- Community and Government Relations Events and Programming: collaborate with the Community and Government Relations team to develop and support events that strengthen relationships with key governmental and community stakeholders, identify and manage special projects, and secure sponsorship and co‑sponsorship opportunities.
- Federal Government Relations: conduct legislative and policy research, track legislative and regulatory developments, build relationships with stakeholders, represent AU in coalition meetings, assist with drafting testimony and correspondence, and prepare advocacy materials.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
- 3‑5 years of relevant experience in government, policy, or community relations.
- Excellent written and oral presentation skills.
- Strong organizational and planning skills.
- Ability to build and grow relationships with University leadership, alumni, and other internal and external constituencies.
- Exceptional listening, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
- Calm and professional under pressure.
Preferred Qualifications
- 4‑6 years of experience with federal education issues, agencies, and regulatory processes.
- Familiarity with the neighborhoods surrounding American University.
Salary
$80,000.00 – $88,000.00 annually.
