The Senior Director of Government Affairs will be a pivotal leader in advocating for and protecting Cengage's business interests across the United States. This role involves shaping how we navigate and influence policy at the state level, as well as developing proactive engagement strategies to further our business objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive multi-state government affairs strategy to promote and protect Cengage priorities.
  • Select, manage, and oversee external lobbyists and policy advisors, while tracking performance metrics and managing the budget effectively.
  • Utilize your extensive knowledge of state legislative processes to create impactful engagement strategies.
  • Analyze state legislation and assess its implications on Cengage’s operations while providing insightful reports to senior leaders.
  • Stay updated on a range of policy issues including K-12 education, workforce development, and technology trends.
  • Advocate for Cengage on significant policy matters to establish the company as a thought leader in education.
  • Communicate proactively with both internal and external stakeholders, educating them on policy impacts on Cengage.
  • Represent Cengage effectively with government officials, industry partners, and associations.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to leverage resources and networks that advance business objectives.
  • Lead rapid-response strategies for urgent legislative developments impacting the business.

Qualifications:

  • At least 10 years of experience in state government affairs, particularly in the education sector.
  • A proven record of successful lobbying efforts on education policy issues.
  • Strong project management skills to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Exceptional communication skills for effective interaction with various stakeholders.
  • An ability to thrive in ambiguous environments and adapt to changing policy landscapes.
  • A self-starter attitude, consistently setting and achieving professional goals.
