Job Summary
We are seeking a passionate and dynamic Director of Music to lead our music program and inspire both emerging and seasoned musicians. The Director of Music will facilitate a ministry grounded in grace by empowering, training, and supporting the congregation to minister and worship through music.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Planning and directing the Alpine Choir, Handbell Choir, Praise Band/Singers, Cantatas and other ensembles as they arise for worship services.
- Recruit new choir members and foster a welcoming environment for participants, with the help of the choir and the Worship and Music Committee.
- Recruit instrumentalists, either paid or volunteer, for rehearsals and worship/special services in collaboration with the Pastor and worship committee.
- Lead inspiring, well-organized rehearsals.
- Provide and coordinate music for Ash Wednesday, midweek Lenten worship services, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday.
- Provide and coordinate music for special services, including Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving, and Christmas and/or Easter cantatas.
- Attend weekly staff and monthly Worship and Music Committee meetings.
- Develop and manage the annual music budget by working with the worship committee and Pastor and submit an annual budget to the Finance Committee.
- Order all music and supplies for the music program.
- All other duties as assigned.
Other Tasks
- Notify the worship committee of the need for maintenance, repair, and/or tuning for the organ, pianos, other insturments, and any other items needed for the music ministry.
- Be responsible for keeping the music inventory organized.
- Arrange for musicians or play at weddings and funerals when requested. It is understood that the director of music and musicians can and will receive honorariums for these activities.
- Arrange for substitutes when needed.
Qualification Requirements / Education and Experience
- Competent musician with ability to work well with choir members, instrumentalists, other staff members, and church members at large.
- Must have knowledge of traditionalANDcontemporary spiritual music and have sensitivity to the needs of the congregation in the area of music and its selection.
- Have training in vocal and/or choral music or equivalent experience.
Other Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work with and train others in the role of music in the worship setting.
- Ability to understand the need for and provide a variety of musical approaches to different forms of worship.
- Have experience and ability to direct choirs of all ages.
- Have excellent interpersonal/communication skills, including the ability to build and foster healthy relationships.
- Have strong organizational skills and an ability to self-motivate.
- Be proficient in playing the piano/keyboard and, ideally, the organ.
Compensation
The Director of Music position is part-time (approximately 15 hours per week), with no pension or health benefits.
The salary will be based on experience.
The Director of Music is permitted to use the church for personal recitals and lessons when they are able to be worked into the church calendar.
