Art Director, Cancer Care Creative Strategy

MUSC Office of Communications and Marketing is seeking a collaborative Art Director to lead creative direction, campaign development, and enterprise-wide storytelling for MUSC's cancer-care initiatives. This role introduces elevated creative approaches, engages both internal and external audiences, and strengthens the clarity and effectiveness of cancer-care communications across MUSC.
This in-person role is based in Charleston, South Carolina.
Key Responsibilities

Serve as the creative lead for cancer-care communications, shaping campaigns, visual systems, and storytelling frameworks that elevate MUSC's brand and advance awareness, prevention, research, philanthropy, and patient experience initiatives.
Translate clinical and research information into clear, compelling visual narratives across the full patient journey — prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and research.
Create insight-driven creative solutions that strengthen MUSC's visibility, enhance brand positioning, and differentiate the organization in the healthcare marketplace.
Partner with the Senior Director of Brand Strategy to advance enterprise-wide creative standards, alignment, and effectiveness.
Execute high-quality design work when needed, applying exceptional visual and conceptual skills to priority projects.
Provide art direction to designers, freelancers, and agency partners to ensure consistent, high-quality execution.
Enterprise, Digital, and Agency Collaboration

Serve as the creative lead for cancer-care initiatives, ensuring all internal and agency-developed work adheres to MUSC brand standards and enterprise creative direction.
Collaborate with enterprise communications teams to ensure content is accurate, consistent, and effectively adapted for digital and enterprise channels.
Partner with writers, content strategists, photographers, videographers, and digital teams to deliver cohesive, multi-platform storytelling.
Ensure all agency-produced creative assets are retained by MUSC and properly managed within the enterprise digital asset management (DAM) system, maintaining organized, accessible, compliant asset libraries.
Act as a cross-enterprise creative partner, fostering alignment, collaboration, and high-quality outcomes.
Production and Creative Operations

Oversee creative asset development from concept through delivery, ensuring accuracy, quality, and alignment with goals.
Manage workflows, timelines, and production processes across concurrent projects.
Deliver production-ready artwork and collaborate with vendors and agencies across print, digital, environmental, and multimedia outputs.
Maintain efficient creative systems and structured file-management practices.
Education and Engagement

Develop tools, templates, and resources that support effective cancer-care communication.
Lead workshops and presentations that promote creative best practices and elevate communication quality.
Champion a culture of design excellence and thoughtful storytelling.
Other Duties

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Design, or a related field.
Experience: 10+ years in graphic design, art direction, and creative leadership, ideally within a creative agency or in-house team, with a focus on healthcare or academic environments.
Experience collaborating with and directing external agencies
Proven ability to lead creative strategy while also contributing exceptional hands-on design work
Skills

Exceptional design skills, conceptual thinking, refined visual aesthetic, and strong creative judgment, with the ability to guide, mentor, and elevate the work of others
Ability to provide creative leadership, set clear direction, and elevate creative quality, clarity, and effectiveness across teams and communications
Proficiency in core creative and collaboration tools, including Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, PowerPoint, Canva, DAM systems, analytics tools, accessibility checkers, and project management platforms
Ability to translate complex clinical and scientific information into compelling visual narratives
Strong portfolio demonstrating brand identity, integrated campaigns, and cross-channel execution across digital and print
Experience developing scalable design systems and templates that improve consistency and efficiency across teams
Strong communication, presentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Knowledge of HIPAA requirements related to visual communications, accessibility standards, and inclusive design principles
