Job Description – High School: Assistant Band Director 2026-2027 (2600005D)Job OverviewThe High School Assistant Band Director will assist the Head Band Director with the planning and implementation of the instructional program for the campus concert bands, marching bands, color guard, and jazz bands. The incumbent will assist in managing aspects of the campus band program and fulfill professional responsibilities related to teaching high school band courses and assisting with the management of the instructional program. Overnight travel, as well as prolonged or irregular work hours are required.Position DescriptionEssential Duties and ResponsibilitiesTeaching and LearningIn coordination with the Head Band Director, implement, monitor, and maintain progress with group and individual instruction, rehearsals, and performances for the concert bands, marching bands, jazz ensembles, and color guard programsPlan appropriate learning activities including determination of appropriate type and level of materials and implement an instructional program that provides an appropriate learning sequence, considering different learning styles and a range of abilitiesAssess student achievement as related to desired educational goals and outcomes and maintain appropriate assessment documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposesManage allotted learning time to maximize student achievementManage the behavior of learners in the instructional setting to ensure the environment is conducive to the learning process; assist and participate in management of student behavior in all parts of the school, center, school grounds, or work site both during and outside of school hours; monitor and enforce compliance with the Fort Bend ISD Student/Parent Handbook and Student Code of ConductEnsure classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe, and conducive to learning and that materials are accessible to students and in good conditionProgram SupervisionPerform all duties as assigned by the Head Band Director, campus administration, and/or Director of Fine ArtsImplement sectional, small group, and large ensemble instruction in the fall and spring semester to provide adequate preparation for all concerts, competitions, auditions, and eventsContinually communicate with students on instructional expectations and keep them informed of their progress in meeting those expectationsEnsure continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to keep them informed of student(s) progressComply with established FBISD policies and procedures regarding fundraising, budget management, inventory and materials management, student travel, employee travel, private lessons, and the submission of entry forms and fees by prescribed deadlinesProvide proper student supervision during and after all program activities until all students have left the areaProfessional ResponsibilitiesEnsure standards of professional conduct are maintained (Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators)Understand and uphold all rules, regulations, and dates that pertain to the instrumental music program (UIL, TMEA, and FBISD policies all apply)Participate in all UIL, TMEA and FBISD sponsored events; encourage student participation in all competitions/events related to the instructional programParticipate in in‑service, professional learning activities, and staff meetings as required or assigned, including meetings with the Director of Fine ArtsSupport and assist feeder programs by attending concerts/shows and offering reasonable assistance to these programsQualificationsBachelor's degree in Music Education or Music PerformanceValid Teaching Certification Issued by Texas Education Agency appropriate to subject and grade level of assignment EC‑12 Music, or has received statement of eligibilityMinimum of 4 years participation in high school or college marching band and/or drum corpsMinimum of 1 year full‑time teaching experience preferredEffective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to use social media effectivelyDemonstrated proficiency on a wind or percussion instrumentAbility to interact appropriately with the public, District staff, and parentsAbility to collaborate with colleagues on the campus and in the instructional feeder patternAbility to market the instructional programAbility to maintain emotional control under stressPhysical Requirements / Working ConditionsThe work environment characteristics and physical demands described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work is performed in classrooms, offices, workstations and meeting rooms.The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers and presentation materials. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties.
