TITLE: Unit DirectorREPORTS TO: Chief Operating OfficerCLASSIFICATION: Full Time, ExemptLOCATION: Yankton, SDBONUS: $3,000 Sign-On bonus paid in two installmentsPAY RANGE: $70,000–$80,000 based on experienceBENEFITS: In addition to a competitive wage, BGCNP offers a $1500 hiring bonus in first paycheck, a $1500 retention bonus at 6 months, and discounted childcare for employee children ages 5+ enrolled in BGCNP programs.MISSION: To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.Job Summary The Unit Director leads day-to-day operations, public relations, and crisis management for all Units, Extensions, and Community Impact Sites in their assigned community. They serve as the face of the Club locally, ensure implementation of the 5 Key Elements of Positive Youth Development, and oversee Club policy compliance, programming, safety, and culture. The Unit Director engages regularly with parents, staff, and the administrative team. All Boys & Girls Club employees are expected to uphold the mission of the Club.Key ResponsibilitiesOperational Leadership & Facility ManagementOversee daily operations across multiple Units, Extensions, and Community Impact SitesEnsure smooth facility operations and proactively address youth and Club-wide management needsManage staffing and safe operations during snow days and unplanned closuresStep in on unexpected or urgent responsibilities typically handled by the administrative teamStaff Leadership & Human ResourcesRecruit, hire, train, supervise, and motivate full- and part-time staffConduct performance reviews (including 60-day, quarterly, and improvement plans), and manage disciplinary actionsHold consistent one-on-one check-ins with direct reports and lead monthly staff meetings and required trainingsEnsure staff consistently implement the 5 Key Elements of Positive Youth DevelopmentPromote and model the Club's core values: excellence, impact-driven work, teamwork, and integrityYouth Development & Member ServicesSupport youth behavior and discipline plans; lead on major guidance and behavior mattersEnsure compliance with behavior policy, special needs protocols, safety standards, and success plansRegularly assess program effectiveness and adjust to meet youth needsTrack and report on youth participation across Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship, and Healthy LifestylesCommunity Engagement & Public RelationsRepresent the Club in the community, including radio, TV, print, and Club toursBuild strong relationships with school principals, counselors, and other educational stakeholdersCultivate parent relationships through orientations, ongoing communication, and daily interactionPartner with local community groups to enhance services and community impactLead Unit-level recruitment and marketing initiativesEvent, Program & Grant OversightLead planning, execution, and follow-up for Club special eventsAdminister grants and ensure programs meet objectives, deliverables, and reporting requirementsProvide program content for newsletters and publicationsComplete annual BGCA Impact and Safety Assessments and meet all evaluation deadlinesFiscal AccountabilityMonitor and manage budgets for staffing, events, and program areasEnsure resource allocation aligns with organizational prioritiesAdministrativeAttend all required organizational meetings, including monthly all-staff, weekly supervisor 1:1s, and Coordinator team meetingsMonitor membership data and null reports for accuracy, and ensure accurate duplicated and unduplicated participation trackingMaintain meeting documentation for all direct report 1:1sPerform other duties as assigned in support of the Club's mission and operationsQualificationsBachelor's degree from an accredited college or universityDemonstrated experience working with youth preschool through 12th gradeProven management and supervisory experience, ideally in a youth-serving or nonprofit environmentStrong leadership presence with the ability to coach, mentor, and hold staff accountablePositive, solutions-oriented outlookExceptional verbal and written communication skillsDeep understanding of youth development principles and behavior management aligned with the Club's core values of fun, supportive relationships, recognition, high expectations, and safetyAbility to provide both immediate and reflective feedback that supports positive youth developmentPhysical RequirementsCapacity to observe, interact with, and communicate effectively among youth, staff, volunteers, and parents to ensure a safe and supportive Club environmentAbility to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods during a shiftAbility to safely operate general office equipment (computers, phones, copiers)This position safety-sensitive and requires consistent awareness of and responsiveness to the safety of all Club membersThis job description indicates the general nature and level of work expected.
