Job Overview
The City of El Cajon is currently seeking dance instructors to teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced level classes for children through senior adults. Applicants should be strong role models and leaders with experience in jazz, ballet, and/or tap.

Recreation Specialist I – Starting Salary: $16.32 per hour

Recreation Specialist II – Starting Salary: $18.46 per hour

Part‑time temporary position

Position
As a Recreation Specialist Instructor, you will perform a full range of duties as assigned, work independently, lead classes, and exercise judgment and initiative. You will receive instruction from the Recreation Supervisor and adapt to new situations while following city policies and procedures.

Typical Duties

Directing and supervising participants of the Recreation programs

Planning, organizing, and instructing classes in your area of specialization within established guidelines

Maintaining records pertinent to programs

Implementing age‑appropriate activities and events

Ensuring the health, welfare, and safety of the participants of the program

Working closely with the Recreation Supervisor to ensure the success of programs through preparation, execution, and evaluation

Assisting staff in organizing and cleaning facility areas and equipment

Establishing and maintaining relationships with parents, community center staff, and other key individuals

Maintaining a fun and positive attitude daily to create a happy environment for participants

Other duties as assigned

Knowledge of recreational activities

Creativity and innovation in recreational programs

Excellent customer service and communication skills

Ability to work with children and/or adults and give effective guidance to participants

Support for the health and well‑being of all participants and staff

Ongoing willingness to take direction and initiative

Ability to evaluate emergency situations and act decisively

Basic computer skills

Flexible work schedule, including morning, evening, weekends, and holidays

Qualification Guidelines

Education : Completion of or currently attending high school. College‑level courses in recreation, education, physical education, or a related field are desired. Additional training in the area of specialization related to dance.

Experience : Experience with recreation programming and leading activities for children and/or adults is desired. Specialized experience in preschool dance, jazz, modern, creative dance, and hip‑hop is recommended. Strong interpersonal skills and a desire to work with participants of all ages is required.

Special Requirements : Ability to obtain a CPR card and First Aid Certificate; may be required to provide means of commute between work sites including personal vehicle. May need a valid Class C California driver’s license with a safe driving record. Ability to lift and move up to 20 lbs.
