Staff Brand Designer

We're looking for a Staff Brand Designer with a strong point of view and the range to move across editorial design, program branding, merch, print, and live events, sometimes all at once. Same level of craft on a 40-foot event banner as on a Newsroom header.
You do your best work when the brief is loose. You move fast, make decisions, and know when you're done. Design isn't just aesthetic to you, it's what makes people feel something. You raise the energy and craft on every team you're on. You'll manage and mentor a small team of designers, set the creative bar, and still ship the work yourself. You're an opinionated tastemaker with conviction in every decision.
Responsibilities:

Own design for Shopify's public-facing editorial properties: the Newsroom, In Stock (Substack), and Engineering Blog. Maintain and evolve the design system for each.
Design infographics, data visualizations, and shareable graphics that make complex information land for executive social and owned channels.
Lead design for recurring internal programs and events, Hack Days, BFCM, Intern Cohorts, Startup Foundations/Connections, and beyond.
Set and maintain the creative bar for Storytelling & Production. Establish creative standards that get adopted across Employee Communications and broader teams.
Apply a systems mindset across the team's full surface area. Build and steward systems that scale across programs, formats, and audiences without losing soul.
Lead large-scale, multi-stakeholder programs end-to-end across external comms and team-wide initiatives. Drive cross-functional coordination from brief to delivery. High craft, always.
Manage and mentor a small team of designers. Coach craft, give clear feedback, and grow your reports.
Bring AI tools into your daily creative process, for ideation, concepting, and pushing work further, faster.
Treat project briefs as minimum floors. Push beyond them, take big swings, and explore new formats.
Qualifications:

A portfolio that demonstrates exceptional craft, a clear point of view, and proven experience leading complex, multi-surface brand work. The ability to build a system and the conviction to know when to break it.
Deep fluency in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), with proven experience designing across both physical and digital formats.
Proven experience with data visualization and infographics. You've made complex information land before.
A track record of owning and evolving design systems, not just operating within them.
Active, hands-on experience with generative AI tools, for image generation, concepting, and workflow. You've made it part of how you work.
High ownership, reliability, and pace. You set your own bar, hit your deadlines, and figure things out.
Accountable for the impact of your work. Seeks signals where they exist, defends the immeasurable where they don't.
Has led design end-to-end on a major brand, editorial, or comms program, owning the work from brief through delivery.
Exceptional design fundamentals. You sweat every detail, down to the pixel and letter.
Clear communicator in the work, in the room, and in writing.
Portfolio Requirement:

Submit one or two pieces of publicly available work demonstrating range across visual design, program branding, infographics or data visualization, or design system thinking.
