Position
Business Manager – University Advancement Office (FLSA Exempt, Full Time)

Overview
This position serves as the primary operational and business manager for the University Advancement office. The Business Manager is responsible for budget management, oversight, tracking, and reporting; facilitating all office needs; serving as the operational liaison to HR; and managing the administrative contact for Advancement with other University offices. Additional duties include collecting all incoming gifts and pledge documentation and organizing these items for gift processing.

Key Responsibilities

Manage and oversee operational budgets, including creating monthly reports for leadership.

Maintain and manage database, word-processing, spreadsheets, and other office software.

Set priorities, independently organize tasks, and perform multiple tasks to meet deadlines.

Interact well with the public, university professionals, and constituents.

Maintain high-level confidentiality and perform duties under pressure.

Serve as liaison to HR for departmental operational needs.

Support gift processing by collecting and organizing incoming gifts and pledge documentation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Computer skills including word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software.

Exceptional organizational and prioritizing skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Knowledge of office procedures, business etiquette, and general office equipment.

Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures independently.

Knowledge of Virginia state policies, Commonwealth policies, and related procedures.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent education/experience.

Experience with database management, word processing, and spreadsheet software/programs.

Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, business, or related field (additional consideration).

Proven experience in managing budgets.

Experience facilitating HR operational needs for an office.

Experience in Microsoft Office (Word, Access, Excel).

Experience with Paradigm 4.0 or higher.

Experience in a University Advancement or Development office.

Previous experience working in higher education.

Salary and Benefits
Starting at $41,121, commensurate with education and experience. The position includes Commonwealth of Virginia and Christopher Newport University employee benefits, including retirement plans, medical, dental, vision, and additional options. Available leave includes vacation, sick time, personal time, and volunteer/service leave.

Conditions of Employment

This is a classified position. New and returning classified employees must complete a 12-month probationary period.

Selected candidate must attend a 2-day New Employee Orientation Program.

Telework Eligibility
This position is eligible for periodic telework as determined by the department. Eligibility is not guaranteed and is subject to supervisor approval. Employees must sign a Telework Agreement.
