Job Description:

NOTE: This role is based in New York City and encourages a minimum of two days per week in the SoHo office. Some roles or teams may require additional in-office attendance if the essential functions of the role require it.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Associate Editor of Scholastic News 1 for first graders.

The Associate Editor will assist in creating engaging, age-appropriate articles and teaching resources for first-grade classrooms nationwide.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Editorial

With support from Editor, concept and write delightful, engaging nonfiction articles aligned with first-grade teaching standards.

With support from Editor, work with design team to review photos, illustrations, and layouts for each issue

Communicate with scientists and historians to factcheck content

Teaching Resources

Write activities, skills pages, and lesson plans.

Deliver all assets on time.

Understand current grade-level pedagogy.

Correlate state standards.

Q/A Web site

Teacher Outreach

Manage teacher advisory board by recruiting advisers, setting up comp subscriptions, and creating monthly issue evaluations.

Set up school visits

Plus various administrative and editorial support tasks

Ability to contribute well-written nonfiction texts for young children

Enthusiasm for learning about classroom practices and pedagogy

Ability to meet all deadlines and deliver print and digital assets according to production schedule

Some knowledge of teaching resources such as skill pages, activities, and lesson plans

Willingness to learn the craft of creating top-notch teaching resources

Skilled at researching articles and interviewing experts

Team player who collaborates well with staff and contributes in meetings

Good communication skills for interacting with teacher customers

Experience and Education:

Some professional publishing and editorial experience

Roles in field of Education is a plus
