Job Summary/Description
WTOC News, THE Southeast News Leader, is looking for a forward‑thinking journalist to lead the day‑to‑day operations of our newsroom. This person will direct daily news coverage, especially breaking news, both on‑air and online, working closely with producers, anchors, and MMJs to develop strong storytelling skills and unique showcasing in every newscast. The assistant news director will work hand‑in‑hand with the assignment manager to coordinate staffing and schedules.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Oversee the daily editorial process and on‑air execution of newscasts, and manage the daily operation of the newsroom, guiding coverage across all platforms
- Assist with planning, staffing, and training for the News Department
- Coach and mentor staff to elevate writing and storytelling
- Direct newsroom operations and schedules
- Work with producers to ensure quality control
- Work with the ND and other managers to establish newsroom goals and work to develop them
- Help develop news coverage strategy for the station and digital platforms
- Critique newscasts/website daily to correct errors, improve coverage, and provide mentoring feedback to news staff
- Provide content for newscasts and website when needed
- Help gather sources/stories for newscasts and MMJs
- Take charge of specials, projects & live events as assigned
Qualifications/Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in Journalism or a related communications field with a minimum of 3 years of experience in a television newsroom, including some management experience
- Strong time management, communication, and people skills required to supervise and interact daily with staff and the community
- Proven leadership ability
- Creativity and passion for news
- Knowledge and understanding of using various digital and social platforms
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to multitask in high‑stress situations
- Detail‑oriented with strong written and verbal communication skills
- Optional bilingual – Spanish
