Job Overview

The Business Manager is responsible for all aspects of accounting, costing, payroll, timekeeping, accounts payable and receivable, financial reporting, financial analysis, budgeting, procurement, contract administration, and warehouse operations at the Falkirk Mine. This position also ensures the accurate and complete accumulation and compilation of financial data and reports in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), the Sarbanes‑Oxley Act requirements, and the Coal Sales Agreement. The Business Manager leads a staff of direct reports, works in close collaboration with the mine president, and coordinates with all departments of the Falkirk Mining Company.
Key Responsibilities

Ensure accurate and timely recording of financial transactions in compliance with GAAP, SOX, and the Coal Sales Agreement.
Manage accounting, procurement, warehouse, and inventory functions.
Supervise accounting, warehouse, and procurement personnel; recruit, train, develop, and evaluate department staff.
Foster a collaborative, high‑performance team environment.
Lead development, review, and execution of annual operating budgets and financial forecasts.
Analyze financial performance and maintain strong relationships with the customer as the primary liaison on financial, costing, and accounting matters.
Engage customer and corporate accounting/tax in determining GAAP treatments for unusual or complex transactions.
Support development of mine plans, tonnage schedules, capital planning, and equipment replacement strategies in coordination with engineering and maintenance.
Evaluate and improve budgeting, forecasting, and financial processes.
Ensure compliance with vendor agreements and good procurement practices to minimize financial risk.
Oversee internal and external audits, keeping the customer and corporate accounting updated throughout the audit process.
Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions and systems consistent with company policies, including approvals in accordance with the Limits of Authority.
Prepare timely and complete periodic financial information and management cost reports.
Lead and prepare materials for customer meetings, board presentations, and annual reviews.
Support ERP/EAM systems (e.g., JD Edwards), including troubleshooting and process improvement.
Support ad‑hoc projects and initiatives as assigned.
Perform all duties in accordance with MSHA regulations, company policies, procedures, and applicable requirements.
Qualifications / Skills & Competencies

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration.
Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in accounting, finance, or financial planning and analysis.
Experience dealing with GAAP accounting determinations and technical accounting proficiency.
Strong instinct to involve corporate support or technical experts for complex or unusual transactions.
Experience leading business or accounting teams and managing annual planning processes.
Background in economic evaluation, budgets, business planning, financial modeling, and reporting to senior leadership.
Demonstrated integrity and sound professional judgment.
Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence and build credibility across departments and the organization.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Ability to interpret and communicate complex financial information to diverse audiences.
Proven ability to work with internal and external customers, providing exemplary service and responsiveness.
Effective written, interpersonal, and verbal communication skills.
Strong work ethic with a commitment to achieving quality results.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
Results‑oriented with attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to handle confidential information.
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
Action oriented, building relationships and driving consensus through effective collaboration.
Preferred: Master’s degree and/or CPA designation.
Preferred: Experience with ERP/EAM systems (e.g., JD Edwards, PeopleSoft, Oracle).
Preferred: Knowledge of surface coal mining operations.
Physical Demands
