Faculty/Division:
Faculty of Arts & Science
Department:
Department of Geography and Planning
Campus:
St. George (Downtown Toronto)
Course Description
This course traces how hip‑hop grew from house parties and DJ battles in the South Bronx in the late 1970s into one of the world's dominant cultural movements. While following the historical growth of hip‑hop, the course utilizes the culture as a lens to understand critical urban issues of the 20th and 21st century. The course begins with a deep dive into hip‑hop's origins in New York City, then moves to a thematic examination of specific issues. Utilizing a mixed‑methods approach, students analyze the work of major artists, explore how cultural, economic, and social forces drive urban change, consider how hip‑hop can be a tool to advance positive social policy outcomes, and deepen skills for interpreting the music.
