About the Role
The Company is seeking a Managing Director to play a pivotal role in its mission-driven organization. The successful candidate will be a steady, strategic leader with a background in architecture or real estate development, and a deep commitment to community engagement and social impact. This role is not for someone who is drawn to traditional practice models; rather, it is for a leader whose career has been shaped by the question of how the built environment can serve and uplift communities. The Managing Director will be responsible for the day-to-day leadership of the real estate and architecture verticals, deeply intersecting with fundraising and operations, and will work closely with the Executive Director to steward strategy, culture, and growth.
Applicants should have a minimum of 15 years' experience in architecture and real estate development, with a focus on community management or project leadership, and at least 10 years in organizational leadership. The role requires a strong people manager with expertise in at least one field and the ability to work across disciplines, as well as a deep understanding of the hybrid nonprofit/fee-for-service model. The ideal candidate will be a relational leader, capable of holding complexity and creating clarity, and will be based in the Bay Area or willing to relocate. Experience in affordable or community-serving real estate development, nonprofit operations, and familiarity with abolitionist frameworks or trauma-informed design are helpful but not required.
