Canvassing Lead for Site-Specific Experience
The Playwrights Realm, an Obie Award-winning non‑profit committed to early career playwrights, new works and boundary‑pushing projects, seeks an individual with experiencing leading and training canvassers as part of social and/or political work, to be part of Daria Miyeko Marinelli’s This is Not NOT a Drill. This is a site‑specific project that lives at the intersection of art and activism, and no acting experience is required.

About the Project:

This is Not NOT a Drill is a unique, site‑specific event combining elements of self‑guided audio tour through Lower Manhattan with facilitated collaborative activities, helping participants explore the city’s history of injustice and rebellion, and discover what adventure exists in taking a stand. Elements of the experience take place both on the city streets around City Hall Park, as well as in a nearby loft space.

About the position:

The function of the Canvassing Lead is to orient canvassing activity participants with quick, basic instruction on canvassing best practices, and support and encourage them as they try their hand at the practice for short sessions in a public park.

A strong applicant will be a dynamic, encouraging and flexible individual excited by the idea of helping participants with a range of comfort and experience levels understand and practice canvassing skills. The position requires the ability to quickly and generously on‑board a steady flow of participants, in a one‑on‑one or group setting. Openness to collaboration, and a willingness to try new approaches, are essential for this position.

Additionally, during the rehearsal period, all staff will support the writer and director in creating the best interactive framework with which to engage audiences, including working together to role play as participants during that exploration. All roles will also develop a familiarity with the entire experience in order to be a flexible resource if the live nature of the ongoing experience requires changes, temporarily or long term.

Job Requirements:

Previous work leading canvass campaigns as a field lead, or as an Activist or community organizer in other related roles.

Ability to help people find and craft language and approaches for difficult situations.

Ability to work outdoors in a public park setting, and navigate potential interaction with the public as well as with participants.

No theatre experience required, though may be helpful. However, confidence with public speaking is essential.

Support other aspects of the experience when needed.

Candidates from underrepresented backgrounds (including but not limited to those of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or ability) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Accommodations are available upon request throughout the process.

Schedule:

Participants’ availability during the full hours for both the rehearsal and public experience process is essential and will be a key factor in hiring decisions. Schedule is tentatively planned as follows:

Rehearsal/Prep: August 11- September 2, Tuesday - Saturday. Hours will generally be between 10am - 6pm, though may begin and end later on some days.

Public Experience: September 3 - October 4. Tues.-Fri 4-9:30pm, Sat./Sun. 2-7:30pm (With possible extension week of October 6-11)

Compensation:

$25/hour
