Public Speaker with Gardening Knowledge for Site-Specific Experience
The Playwrights Realm, an Obie Award-winning non-profit dedicated to new plays and unique boundary-pushing projects, seeks an individual with strong gardening knowledge and experience speaking to groups to participate in a private development workshop of Daria Miyeko Marinelli’s This is Not Not a Drill. This is a site‑specific project that lives at the intersection of art and activism, and no acting or theatre experience is required.

About the Project
This is Not NOT a Drill is a unique, site-specific event that combines elements of self-guided audio tour through Lower Manhattan with facilitated collaborative activities to help participants explore the city’s history of injustice and rebellion, and discover what adventure exists in taking a stand. Elements of the experience take place both on the city streets around City Hall Park, as well as in a nearby loft space.

About the position
The function of the Public Speaker within the experience is to interact with participants during their walking tour and talk to them about the concept of Guerilla Gardening while planting ideas (not actual plants) with participants. They draw audience members into the conversation with prepared material while engaging in organic ad-lib with participants.

Strong applicants will be something of a benevolent trickster: playful, natural, and confident as they deliver and tailor the material to individual audiences. Openness to collaboration, and a willingness to try new approaches, are essential for this position.

Additionally, during the rehearsal period, all staff will support the writer and director in creating the best interactive framework with which to engage audiences, including working together to role play as participants during that exploration. All roles will also develop a familiarity with the entire experience in order to be a flexible resource if the live nature of the ongoing experience requires changes, temporarily or long term.

Job Requirements

Experience of and knowledge about gardening is ideal but training will be provided so candidates who are interested in these subjects are encouraged to apply. (Outdoor gardening, landscaping or forestry, etc, not house plants.)

Strong public speaker. Ability to deliver prepared remarks while also engaging in organic, ad-lib conversation with participants.

No theatre experience required. Comfort with physicality and/or a background in athletics, dance, clowning or other physical movement background is a plus, but not required.

Candidates from underrepresented backgrounds (including but not limited to those of marginalized race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or ability) are strongly encouraged to apply. Accommodations available upon request throughout hiring and workshop.

Schedule

Rehearsal/Prep: August 11- September 2, Tuesday - Saturday. Hours will generally be between 10am - 6pm, though may begin and end later on some days.
