The Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA), the country’s oldest international English-language Jewish news service, is looking for a fast-paced PM News Editor to help run our newsroom during the afternoon and evening shift. As part of the strategic expansion of our not-for-profit news operation, this editor will manage breaking news coverage, assign and edit stories, collaborate with reporters and ensure our digital platforms remain current with accurate, compelling journalism. The planned hours for this position are Monday through Thursday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET and Friday from 9 a.m to 5 p.m, though minor scheduling variations can be proposed by applicants.

The ideal candidate has exceptional news judgment, thrives under deadline pressure, has an eye for buzzy news, has outstanding line editing and copy editing skills and understands how audiences consume news across websites, newsletters, search and social media. The candidate must have a solid understanding of Jewish life, culture, religion and politics, current events in Washington, Israel and the wider Middle East and, ideally, the New York Jewish community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor breaking news and social media to identify and assign stories that require immediate coverage.
  • Oversee early-career and breaking news reporters.
  • Edit articles for accuracy, clarity, style and legal considerations.
  • Write and update breaking news stories continuously as events develop.
  • Write sharp and engaging headlines based on SEO, AEO and other efforts to increase audience reach.
  • Curate stories on the homepage, app and newsletter throughout the afternoon and evening news cycle.
  • Produce lightning-fast alerts and social media posts.
  • Track audience analytics and adjust coverage strategy based on reader interest when appropriate.
  • Help plan coverage for major scheduled events while remaining flexible for unexpected news, including adjusting working hours as needed to stay on top of the news.
  • Mentor young reporters in the art of breaking news and provide constructive editorial feedback.

Qualifications

  • 5-7+ years of newsroom or digital editing experience, including managerial experience.
  • Strong editing, writing, headlining and fact-checking skills.
  • Excellent news judgment, understanding of analytics and dedication to journalistic ethics.
  • Experience covering breaking news in a fast-paced digital environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple stories simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Jewish history, culture, religious practice and contemporary issues affecting Jewish communities.
  • Experience with live blogs and social media is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the New York Jewish community is preferred.
  • Hebrew language skills are a plus.

They are comfortable managing breaking news, making sound editorial decisions under pressure, guiding reporters and ensuring that coverage reflecting the diversity, complexity and significance of Jewish life and global events remains competitive throughout the afternoon and evening news cycle.
