The National Capital Trolley Museum is seeking a creative and organized Volunteer Part-Time Marketing & Social Media Coordinator to help promote the museum’s programs, events, collections, and mission through effective marketing and communications.
The Marketing & Social Media Coordinator will serve as the primary liaison between the museum and its external marketing agency, ensuring the agency receives timely, accurate, and engaging content to share across the museum’s website, social media platforms, email campaigns, and other marketing channels. This position will work closely with museum staff, volunteers, and department leaders to identify stories, gather content, and coordinate a consistent flow of information that highlights the museum’s activities and impact.
This is an unpaid volunteer leadership position with a flexible schedule. While much of the work can be completed remotely, occasional on-site visits are encouraged to capture content and participate in museum events.
Key Responsibilities
Marketing Coordination
Serve as the primary point of contact between the museum and its external marketing team.
Coordinate regular meetings and communications with the museum's marketing partner.
Ensure the marketing team receives timely updates on museum activities, events, restoration projects, educational programs, and organizational news.
Monitor marketing requests and ensure needed information is provided promptly.
Help maintain a marketing calendar for events, campaigns, and seasonal promotions.
Content Development
Collect news, photographs, videos, and stories from museum staff and volunteers.
Develop content ideas highlighting museum collections, historic streetcars, restoration projects, volunteers, exhibits, educational programs, and special events.
Draft or edit social media posts, newsletter articles, website updates, and promotional materials for review by museum leadership and the marketing agency.
Ensure communications are accurate, engaging, and aligned with the museum's mission and brand.
Social Media Support
Coordinate with the external marketing team to maintain an active presence on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and other social media platforms.
Identify opportunities to promote museum events, volunteer opportunities, memberships, donations, and educational programming.
Monitor social media activity and share community feedback, comments, and questions with museum leadership when appropriate.
Assist in developing campaigns that increase engagement, followers, and public awareness.

Encourage volunteers and staff to submit photos, stories, and project updates for publication.
Community Outreach
Help identify opportunities to promote the museum through community organizations, tourism partners, schools, local media, and transportation organizations.
Support marketing efforts for fundraising campaigns, membership drives, concerts, festivals, and other public programs.
Assist in tracking the effectiveness of marketing campaigns and recommend improvements.
Required Qualifications
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple projects.
Experience with social media platforms and digital communications.
Ability to work collaboratively with volunteers, staff, and external partners.
Comfortable gathering information from multiple departments and organizing it into clear communications.
Self-motivated with strong attention to detail.
Interest in museums, history, transportation, education, or nonprofit organizations.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or social media management.
Familiarity with content management systems, email marketing platforms, or graphic design tools such as Canva.
Experience coordinating with marketing agencies or communications consultants.
Photography or videography experience is a plus.
Experience working with nonprofit organizations is preferred.
Time Commitment
Approximately

5–10 hours per week , with flexibility based on museum activities and event schedules. Occasional weekend or evening participation is encouraged to capture content during museum events.
