SBNC VISTA Y4 Community Engagement Coordinator

Strycker's Bay Neighborhood Council is a grassroots, community-based organization serving the Upper West Side and Harlem. Our mission is to give families and children access to the tools, resources, and knowledge that will empower them to break the cycle of poverty and improve their quality of life. We serve as a neighborhood anchor operating with an open-door policy, staffed by professionals who live in and know our community, with firsthand understanding of the ongoing needs of low-income families, parents, and children working toward school success. Our services include after-school programming, tutoring, summer camp, youth workforce development, eviction prevention assistance, and family support. While the Upper West Side as a whole is viewed as affluent, there is significant and often overlooked poverty within its neighborhoods. Our community is home to more than 32,000 children under age 18; 11.4% of families live below the federal poverty level and 25% are food insecure. The children facing the greatest economic hardship also face the steepest barriers to accessing local educational resources, and too many low-income students experience poor academic outcomes as a result. Strycker's Bay works to close that gap by meeting families where they are and connecting them directly to the supports they need to succeed.
