Sports Illustrated Names 100 Best Twitter Accounts

Sports Illustrated — a pretty solid source when it comes to sports — has picked out the 100 best Twitter accounts to follow.

The fourth annual “Twitter 100” features no SI writers (because that would be stupid) but plenty of other quality athletes, journalists and more. Below are some accounts that made SI’s list that we also enjoy. Call it the FishbowlNY Twitter 7.

Rick Reilly Recalls His Encounter with ‘Broke’ Jack Nicklaus

As part of Sports Illustrated‘s 60th anniversary celebration, associate editor Ted Keith sat down with ESPN’s Rick Reilly to revisit the latter’s career-launching coverage of the 1986 Masters golf tournament. Miracle #1 is that Reilly had the SI job in the first place. As he tells Keith, when he traveled from LA to New York for a big Time & Life building lunchtime job interview, he was forced to borrow a sports jacket several sizes too big and knocked a glass of water into the lap of managing editor Mark Mulvoy.

Miracle #2 is even more astounding. Picking up on a tip that Jack Nicklaus, who would go on to win the 1986 tournament in dramatic fashion, was broke, a nervous Reilly shanked it way right. From the Q&A:

“So now I’ve got to talk to Jack Nicklaus for the first time in my life, I’m 28-years-old and my knees are knocking. I go up to him and I say, “Jack, I’m Rick Reilly from Sports Illustrated. We hear you’re broke.””

Sports Illustrated Adds Breaking-News Video Channel

On a day that belongs to TMZ Sports, a much older sports media franchise is hoping to carve out some additional traction in the online video world.

Per Ad Age‘s Michael Sebastian, Sports Illustrated has hired a dozen people so far to power today’s newly launched SI Wire, including three on-air TV personalities. From his report:

“The news cycle is so vicious and moves so quickly,” said Paul Fichtenbaum, editor of the Time Inc. Sports Group, which includes Sports Illustrated. “We want to make sure that as these things evolve that we can present them in video fashion.”

Obama: Foley Execution ‘Appalled’ the Entire World (TVNewser)
President Obama took the podium Wednesday in Martha’s Vineyard to speak about James Foley, the American journalist who was beheaded by ISIS in a video released Tuesday. The United States Wednesday morning verified the authenticity of the video, which also shows another captive American journalist, Steven Sotloff, and warns that he will be next to die. FishbowlDC Obama said, “No just God would stand for what they did yesterday or every single day… People like this ultimately fail. They fail because the future’s won by those who build and not destroy. The world is shaped by people like Jim Foley.” ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, FOX News, CNN, MSNBC and Al Jazeera America all broadcast Obama’s statement live. NYT Obama declared on Wednesday that the entire world was “appalled” by the videotaped beheading of Foley by Islamic militants, speaking as American warplanes conducted 14 airstrikes in Iraq and the State Department asked the Pentagon to send as many as 300 more American troops to Iraq for security. Mashable Obama sent U.S. troops to Syria earlier this summer to rescue a number of Americans held by a violent extremist group, including Foley, but the troops did not find the hostages, senior Obama administration officials said Wednesday. The officials said the rescue mission was authorized after intelligence agencies believed they had identified the location inside Syria where the hostages were being held. HuffPost Associated Press CEO Gary Pruitt condemned the murder of journalist Foley in a statement on Wednesday. His murder should be treated as a war crime, according to Pruitt. Foley went missing in Syria in 2012. He contributed to the GlobalPost and Agence France-Presse, among other media outlets. TVNewser CBS’s Clarissa Ward changed her profile picture, Fox News’s Conor Powell remembers him as “a great guy,” while Al Jazeera journalist Mohamed Fadel Fahmy, himself imprisoned in Egypt, says Foley’s murder “will spark a revolution against terrorists.” These are just some of the ways those who knew and worked alongside the intrepid journalist are remembering their colleague killed by ISIS militants.

Norm Pearlstine Dismisses Spreadsheet Furor [Updated]

Time__Inc_-logo-2ED06AA15C-seeklogo.com_Sometimes, Time-ing can be everything. New York contributing editor Gabriel Sherman has been working on a big feature article about Time Inc. that is due next week.

So… When Gawker fanned the flames of the Sponsored Content Apocalypse with its Monday report about a controversial Sports Illustrated spreadsheet, Sherman was in a perfect warm-phone position to get comment from a top executive. He spoke today with Time Inc. chief content officer Norm Pearlstine:

Pearlstine pushed back hard against the criticism of the document. He said the controversy has been drummed up by the [Newspaper] Guild as part of a tense contract negotiation.

Mo’ne Davis Covers Sports Illustrated

Mo’ne Davis, a 13-year-old pitcher for the Philadelphia Taney Dragons, has already made history with her arm. Using a mean 70 mph fastball, she became the first girl to throw a shutout in the Little League World Series. Now Davis has made magazine history as well. Davis is the first Little Leaguer to be featured on the cover of SI.

Chris Stone, SI’s managing editor, said Davis’ domination on the mound made it “the easiest type of story to identify as a cover story.”

For her part, Davis views her fame with proper perspective. “People were like, ‘Oh, there are going to be people running up to you taking pictures’ and I thought it was going to be a bunch of little kids,” she told SI. “But it’s grown-ups! And that’s, like, creepy.”

Gawker Shares Egregious Time Inc. Spreadsheet [Updated]

SICrowdSourceCoverWow. Via the Newspaper Guild, Gawker’s Hamilton Nolan has obtained an internal Time Inc. spreadsheet that was used to help decide which Sports Illustrated writers to lay off.

It is column “J” that is already reverberating across social media. The column is titled: ‘Produces content that [is] beneficial to advertisers:’

Anthony Napoli, a union representative with the Newspaper Guild, tells us: “Time Inc. actually laid off Sports Illustrated writers based on the criteria listed on that chart. Writers who may have high assessments for their writing ability, which is their job, were in fact terminated based on the fact the company believed their stories did not ‘produce content that is beneficial to advertiser relationships.’”

SI Piece on Drew Brees and Training Equipment Doesn’t Mention He’s an Investor

This week’s Sports Illustrated features a giant cover story (subscriber-only) on the New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees. In the piece, by Austin Murphy, the world is introduced to the TRX, a cable-based strength training system. The TRX is lauded throughout the article, and yet — as Jim Romenesko points out — there’s one key detail missing: Brees is an investor in TRX’s parent company, Fitness Anywhere.

You’d think this little tidbit would be mentioned, especially because Brees credits the TRX with keeping his body operating at an elite level. There is no doubt some people will read this article and (foolishly, of course) think, “I could stop looking like me and start looking like Drew Brees if I just buy the TRX!”

To its credit, SI did admit Brees’ relationship with the company should’ve been disclosed.

World Cup Shatters Facebook Engagement Records (LostRemote)
The World Cup set single-event Facebook engagement records within the tournament’s first week. Now, with the tournament over, it is official: the 2014 World Cup is the most talked-about event in Facebook history. From June 12-July 13, 350 million people generated 3 billion World Cup-related interactions. AllFacebook These numbers make the 2014 World Cup the most-talked-about sporting event in the social network’s history. The tournament’s final match, which resulted in 280 million interactions from 88 million users, was the top sporting event in Facebook’s history. Capital New York All told, 26.5 million people watched the match Sunday via either ABC or Univision, making it the most-watched men’s World Cup final ever. ABC drew an average of 17.3 million viewers according to Nielsen Fast National ratings, the best numbers ever for a World Cup final, and the third best for any World Cup game. The two games that beat it were U.S.-Portugal from earlier in this year’s tournament (18.2 million viewers), and the 1999 Women’s final between the U.S. and China (17.9 million viewers). Deadline Hollywood Both ABC/ESPN and Univision had their best World Cup ever this year, with ESPN/ABC up 39 percent in viewership over the 2010 World Cup and up 96 percent over the 2006 World Cup. Over the 64 games of this year’s tournament, Univision was up 34 percent from its total audience from 2010. Variety The combined 26.5 million for Germany’s 1-0 victory is a larger audience than the deciding game for the most recent World Series on Fox (19.2 million) and NBA Finals on ABC (18.0 million), and also tops the BCS Championship game in college football on ESPN in January (25.6 million).
