The West Boulevard Library is located along the West Boulevard Corridor on the bus line. This community hub serves as a meeting place for residents and supports partnerships to enrich lives through digital literacy and library services for teens.
Schedule
Day shift 8am – 5pm. This position requires at least one closing shift per week of 11am-8pm, and alternating Friday and Saturday shifts of 8am-5pm.
Position Summary
This is a Teen Services Librarian position. The Teen Services Librarian provides programming to youth ages 12 to 18 and focuses on special populations including preteens, emerging adults, parents/caregivers, and educators. Responsibilities include delivering diverse programs with equity, diversity, and inclusion; applying principles of adolescent development; and addressing the needs, interests, and goals of all teens in the community. In addition to programming, the role provides frontline customer service to library patrons of all ages, including technology assistance and helping customers access library resources in multiple formats (print, digital, media, programs and classes). Other responsibilities include responding to reference, research/homework, and readers advisory requests; explaining library services and policies; developing and promoting the collection; and assisting in planning and implementing programs focused on Learning, Literacies, Creativity, Community, and Leadership & Life Skills.
Essential Functions
- Meet customers' informational, research and pleasure reading needs by matching requests to appropriate resources.
- Determine the timeliest, authoritative information source for each customer based on questions, required information, and format needs.
- Train customers in the use of electronic reference resources, internet searches, e-books and digital downloads; provide guidance for general and specific requests; enable customers to operate PCs, tablets, and mobile devices.
- Troubleshoot problems or instruct customers in software/hardware use; assess the level of instruction needed for technology use.
- Manage and maintain library materials in assigned areas; note community needs and customer requests; consult reviews, check loss reports, and recommend purchases.
- Perform collection management tasks to ensure resources meet community needs.
- Provide quality programming for a targeted audience; create promotional materials and merchandise displays.
- Develop varied programs, publications and displays to enhance library services.
- Continue professional development through workshops, classes, webinars, conferences, etc.; seek marketing assistance when needed.
- Choose activities to develop professional or learning goals.
- Perform administrative duties (e.g., manager on duty, scheduling, IT ticketing, customer concerns, reserving meeting rooms, interpreting/enforcing policy).
- Exercise sound judgment and use available resources to determine actions needed.
- Provide coordination and oversight of the teen volunteer program at West Blvd. Library.
- Collaborate with Library Associates to plan and implement teen programming.
- Contribute to the CMLibrary Teens Instagram account as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of public library experience
Education
- Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution
Licenses and Certifications
- NC Public Library certification required or must be obtained within 12 months of hire
Preferred Qualifications
- 1 year of supervisory or above work experience
- Bilingual
- Experience engaging with preteen and teen populations in a public library setting
- Experience facilitating outreach services and developing partnerships to connect students with public library services
- Experience and interest developing inclusive programming for preteen and teen populations
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge: Library science; Reference interview process; Familiarity with the library's classification system, cataloging interface of the Online Public Access Catalog and OCLC/MARC records.
Skills: Readers' advisory and reference resources; excellent customer service (verbal and written); ability to work with diverse populations; assessing customer needs; strong time-management and attention to detail.
Abilities: Decision-making, collaboration, technical/professional knowledge, planning and organizing, managing work, customer focus, continuous learning.
Computer Skills
Advanced proficiency in various computer applications; adept with PCs, tablets, mobile devices, internet and database searching, and email.
Work Environment
Office setting with moderate noise.
