The West Boulevard Library is located along the West Boulevard Corridor on the bus line for easy access. This close-knit community on Charlotte’s westside houses several long-established neighborhoods. The library serves as a community hub and supports digital literacy needs while partnering with local resources to enrich residents’ lives.

Schedule:
Day shift 8am – 5pm. This position requires at least one closing shift per week of 11am-8pm, and alternating Friday and Saturday shifts of 8am-5pm.

Position Summary:
This is a Teen Services Librarian position. The Teen Services Librarian provides programming to youth ages 12 to 18. The role also focuses on preteens, emerging adults, and parents/caregivers and educators. Teen Services staff aim to serve teens with diverse programs that reflect equity, diversity, and inclusion; principles of adolescent development; and the needs, interests, and goals of all teens in the community. In addition to programming, this position provides frontline customer service to library users of all ages, including technology assistance and helping customers access the library’s resources in multiple formats. Other responsibilities include responding to reference, research/homework, and readers’ advisory requests; explaining and interpreting library services, policies and procedures; developing and promoting the library’s collection; and assisting in planning programs focusing on Learning, Literacies, Creativity, Community, and Leadership & Life Skills.

Essential Functions:

  • Meet customers’ informational, research and reading needs by matching requests to appropriate resources.
  • Determine the timeliest, authoritative information source for each customer, based on questions, required information, and preferred format.
  • Train customers in the use of electronic resources, internet searches, e-books and digital downloads; provide guidance for general and specific requests; enable customers to operate PCs, tablets, and mobile devices to access digital materials.
  • Troubleshoot problems or instruct customers in software and hardware; assess the level of instruction needed to use technology.
  • Manage and maintain library materials in assigned areas; note community needs, check reports, and recommend purchases.
  • Perform collection management tasks to ensure resources meet community needs.
  • Provide quality programming for a targeted audience; create promotional materials and merchandise with displays.
  • Develop varied programs, publications and displays to enhance library services.
  • Continue professional development through workshops, classes, webinars, conferences, and retreats; request marketing assistance.
  • Choose activities to develop skills needed to meet professional or learning goals.
  • Perform administrative duties as needed (e.g., manager on duty, scheduling, IT tickets, customer concerns, reserving rooms, enforcing policy).
  • Exercise sound judgment and use available resources to determine actions needed.
  • Provide coordination and oversight of the teen volunteer program at West Blvd. Library.
  • Collaborate with Library Associates to plan and implement programming for teens.
  • Contribute to the West Boulevard Library’s Teens Instagram account.

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum of two years of public library experience

Education:
Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution

Licenses and Certifications:
NC Public Library certification required or must be obtained within 12 months of hire

Preferred Qualifications:
1 year of supervisory or above work experience; bilingual; experience engaging with preteen and teen populations in a public library setting; experience facilitating outreach services and developing partnerships to connect students with public library services; experience and interest developing inclusive programming for preteen and teen populations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge: Library science; Reference interview process; Familiarity with the library’s classification system, cataloging interface, and OCLC/MARC records.

Skills: Familiarity with readers’ advisory and reference resources; excellent customer service, including strong verbal and written skills; ability to work with a diverse population; assessing customers’ needs and matching with appropriate information or materials; excellent time-management and attention to detail.

Abilities: Decision-making; Collaboration; Technical/professional knowledge; Planning and organizing; Managing work; Customer focus; Continuous learning.

Computer Skills: Advanced proficiency in various computer applications; adept with PCs, tablets and mobile devices, internet and database searching, and email.

Work Environment: Works in an office setting with moderate noise
