Librarian (Adult Services) – Independence Regional Library

Salary: $54,361.60 - $67,952.00 (exempt, salaried position). Pay rates are based on education, skill, experience level, and internal equity, including assessment of applicant’s salary history and qualifications compared to market rates and job requirements.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Library serves a community of approximately one million citizens in the Charlotte area (Matthews, Pineville, Mint Hill, Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville). The library system offers 20 locations, online services, and targeted outreach to deliver exceptional library services and programs aimed at creating a community of readers and empowering individuals with free access to information.
Position Summary
Performs professional and technical library work in the Adult Services Department. The selected candidate plans and delivers programs and classes focused on lifelong learning, early literacy, technology assistance, educational support, and workforce development. The role provides outreach services into the local community, focusing on older adults, and engages teen populations during after‑school periods. Other responsibilities include responding to reference, research/homework, and readers' advisory requests; providing desk coverage; routine circulation tasks; interpreting library services, policies, and procedures; and managing and promoting the library's collection.
Essential Functions
- Meet customers' informational, research, and pleasure reading needs by matching requests to appropriate resources.
- Determine the timeliest, authoritative, and appropriate information source for each customer based on question asked, information required, and format.
- Train customers in the use of electronic reference resources, internet searches, e‑books, and digital downloads; provide guidance and instruction for both general and specific requests.
- Enable customers to operate PCs, tablets, mobile devices to access digital materials.
- Troubleshoot problems or instruct customers in the use of software and hardware; assess level of instruction needed to use technology.
- Manage and maintain library materials in specific, assigned areas of the collection by noting community needs and customer requests, consulting reviews and bibliographies, checking lost and missing reports and recommending purchases.
- Perform relevant collection management tasks to ensure resources are available to meet the informational and recreational needs of the community.
- Provide quality programming for a targeted audience; create promotional materials and merchandise collection with displays.
- Provide outreach services by delivering programs into the local community.
- Develop varied and creative programs, publications, and displays to enhance library services.
- Continue professional development through workshops, classes, webinars, conferences, retreats, etc. Choose activities to enhance or develop skills needed to meet professional or learning goals.
- Provide service desk coverage and assist co‑workers with standard library tasks.
- Perform administrative duties that may include serving as manager on duty, submitting maintenance and IT tickets, dealing with customer concerns, interpreting and enforcing library policy.
- Exercise sound judgment and use available resources to determine the action needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum of two years of public library experience.
Education
Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA‑accredited institution.
Licenses and Certifications
NC Public Library certification required or must be obtained within 12 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
Bilingual preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of Library Science, Reference Interview Process, Familiarity with the library's classification system, cataloging interface of the Online Public Access Catalog and OCLC/MARC records.
Skills Familiarity with readers' advisory and reference resources, Excellent customer service (verbal and written), Working with a diverse population, Assessing a customer's needs, Excellent time‑management skills with attention to detail.

Advanced proficiency in various computer applications; technological adeptness with PCs, tablets, mobile devices, internet and database searching, and email.

Small office setting with moderate noise, multiple coworkers; duties on the public floor.
