HVAC Mechanic - Refrigeration / Ice Machine

The Research and Administrative Facilities (RAF) department manages the operations and maintenance of research and administrative buildings, including both the Bastrop and Smithville campuses. The RAF team supports all Houston campuses and properties through parking, transportation, audio visual and event operations, and exterior site operations.
An HVAC Mechanic in this position will maintain, troubleshoot, and repair heating, ventilating, air‑conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
Install, maintain, and repair HVAC systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration.
Configure initial settings and final adjustments of commercial HVAC installations to meet design specifications.
Monitor and troubleshoot HVAC issues using Building Automation Systems (BAS) and diagnostic tools.
Follow preventive maintenance schedules and recommend major overhauls.
Investigate and resolve outages; order needed materials and maintain inventory.
Perform corrective maintenance on HVAC equipment and related BAS systems.
Participate in on‑call duties and respond to emergency conditions as required.
Support load management and emergency response as designated essential personnel.
Competencies & Job Functions
Interpret blueprints, sketches, and diagrams to plan work.
Estimate cost of work and order materials in accordance with CMMS standards.
Document work orders, labor hours, and materials used; maintain accurate asset records.
Communicate issues, concerns, and process‑improvement options with supervisors.
Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC equipment per manufacturer specifications and CMMS directives.
Handle incidental and related duties as required.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum four years of mechanical experience, including commercial HVAC installation, repair, and maintenance.
Preferred associate degree (as referenced by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations); bachelor’s degree preferred.
Minimum three years HVAC experience; minimum two years refrigeration experience.
EPA Universal License
required.
Two years of refrigeration/ice machine experience and three years of commercial or residential experience.
Ability to troubleshoot walk‑in coolers/freezers.
On‑call availability as part of an on‑call group.
Competence in satisfying security and integrity requirements for critical infrastructure as defined by Texas law.
Compensation Salary range: $57,500 – $86,500 (USD).
