Job Overview
On Cue Hire has an
immediate need for an Assignment Editor
for an international news network based in
Washington, DC . This position supports a weekday morning shift of
6:00 AM-3:00 PM
and plays a critical role in daily editorial decision-making for a fast-paced newsroom covering breaking and political news.
The Assignment Editor will demonstrate strong editorial judgment, sharp news instincts, and a deep understanding of the Washington, DC political landscape. This role is ideal for a newsroom professional who thrives under pressure and can move decisively as stories unfold.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as a primary point of contact for incoming news tips, story leads, and public inquiries
Identify, develop, and assign stories of the day with an emphasis on political and breaking news
Determine where correspondents and crews need to be, which angles to pursue, and how to secure required assets
Maintain high editorial standards to ensure accurate, timely, and impactful coverage
Collaborate closely with producers, reporters, correspondents, and digital teams to align editorial priorities
Participate in daily editorial meetings and contribute to coverage strategy across platforms
Ensure urgency, clarity, and accuracy during high-pressure news cycles
Support newsroom workflows and uphold editorial integrity Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Broadcast, Communications, or a related field
Minimum of
5 years of experience
in a television news environment
Strong editorial judgment and ability to prioritize multiple stories in a fast-moving newsroom
Deep familiarity with the Washington, DC political beat
Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Strong news instincts with a proactive, detail-oriented approach
Experience with newsroom systems and editorial tools is a plus Experience Level
At least 5 years of newsroom experience required
Background in assignment desk operations, editorial decision-making, or political news coverage strongly preferred
