
Steel Detailing Drafter

The Steel Detailing Drafter works under supervision to create detailed shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and installation drawings for steel canopy and awning structures. This role involves breaking down approved designs into individual component details, ensuring accurate dimensions and specifications for fabrication and field installation.
Responsibilities
Steel Detailing & Drawing Production
Create shop drawings for steel canopy and awning components under supervision
Detail individual steel members including beams, columns, bracing, and connections
Produce fabrication drawings showing cutting lists, hole locations, and welding details
Develop installation drawings for field crews showing erection sequences and field connections
Dimension all drawings accurately for shop fabrication and field installation
Follow company detailing standards, templates, and drawing conventions
Technical Documentation
Work from approved layout drawings and engineering calculations to create detail drawings
Include material specifications, fastener callouts, and finish requirements
Create accurate bills of materials for steel components
Maintain organized project files and drawing revisions
Use proper layering, line weights, and annotation standards in CAD
Quality & Accuracy
Check own work for dimensional accuracy and completeness before submission
Incorporate redline comments and corrections from supervisor or checkers
Learn to identify and avoid common detailing errors
Ask questions when encountering unclear design requirements or specifications
Ensure drawings are clear and understandable for fabrication and installation personnel
Coordination & Learning
Coordinate with Layout department to understand design intent
Communicate with supervisor regarding project priorities and questions
Participate in training on company products, connection details, and detailing standards
Study standard details and completed project examples
Learn steel fabrication processes and how drawings are used in the shop
Seek feedback and implement suggestions for improvement
Qualifications
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent
Basic to intermediate CAD experience (AutoCAD or similar software)
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
Understanding of dimensions, scales, and geometric relationships
Basic knowledge of steel shapes and structural terminology
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Good communication and teamwork skills
Willingness to learn steel fabrication and detailing practices
Preferred:
Associate's degree or coursework in Drafting, CAD Technology, or related field
0-2 years of experience in steel detailing, drafting, or structural design
Familiarity with structural steel connections and fasteners
Knowledge of welding symbols and fabrication processes
