Job Description

LOCAL DISTRICT CLASSIFICATION PLAN CLASS TITLE: ATHLETIC DIRECTOR BASIC FUNCTION:

Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate the district’s interscholastic athletic programs in alignment with Board policies and KHSAA bylaws, ensuring safe, compliant, and educationally sound athletic experiences for all students. Provide leadership and support to principals and coaches in areas of eligibility, scheduling, facilities, risk management, and equity; serve as the primary district liaison for athletic programs with KHSAA, officials, parents, and community partners. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES Provide leadership and general oversight for all district athletic programs and activities, in collaboration with building principals. Implement and monitor KHSAA bylaws and district/Board policies related to athletics, eligibility, amateur status, transfers, and sportsmanship, and ensure consistent application across schools. Assist principals in maintaining institutional control of athletics, including eligibility verification, required forms, documentation, and submission of reports to KHSAA and the district. Coordinate athletic schedules and contracts for contests and tournaments, including officials, transportation, and facility usage for practices and events. Oversee game and event operations (game management, supervision, security, crowd control, ticketing, and financial procedures) to ensure a safe and orderly environment. Develop, implement, and periodically review emergency action plans (EAPs) for athletic venues, in coordination with school administrators, athletic trainers, and local emergency responders. Monitor and support compliance with student-athlete safety expectations, including concussion protocols, heat-illness prevention measures, severe-weather guidelines, and other health-related procedures. Ensure coaches complete required trainings and certifications (e.g., First Aid/CPR, mandated child protection and safety trainings, NFHS/KHSAA-required courses) and maintain current records of completion. Collaborate with principals on the recruitment, selection, onboarding, and supervision of coaches and athletic staff, consistent with district policies and procedures. Provide guidance, mentoring, and professional development opportunities for coaches, emphasizing student welfare, sportsmanship, and program integrity. Promote positive sportsmanship, ethical conduct, and respectful behavior among student-athletes, coaches, and spectators, and respond to sportsmanship and conduct concerns. Assist in the preparation and monitoring of athletic budgets; oversee purchasing, inventory, and maintenance of athletic equipment, uniforms, and supplies in accordance with district fiscal procedures. Coordinate the use and maintenance of athletic facilities in collaboration with school and district operations staff to ensure safe, appropriate conditions for practices and events. Support and monitor compliance with Title IX and district equity requirements in athletics, including participation opportunities, scheduling, facilities, equipment, and promotion. Facilitate effective communication among administration, coaches, student-athletes, parents, and community members regarding athletic procedures, expectations, and events. Support inclusive practices and reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities and other underrepresented groups in athletic programs. Maintain accurate and secure records related to eligibility, rosters, physical examinations, parental permissions, injuries, incidents, and required reports. Use appropriate technology systems for scheduling, eligibility, communication, recordkeeping, and data analysis related to athletics. Represent the district at KHSAA meetings, league or conference meetings, and other professional gatherings as assigned. Perform related duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

Knowledge and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE OF:

KHSAA bylaws, district and Board policies, and applicable state and federal regulations governing interscholastic athletics; principles and practices of athletic program administration, including budgeting, scheduling, personnel supervision, and facilities management; current best practices in student-athlete safety, including emergency action planning, injury and concussion management, heat-illness prevention, and strength-conditioning guidelines; Title IX and equity considerations as they apply to interscholastic athletics; effective principles of leadership, team building, supervision, and conflict resolution; oral and written communication skills appropriate for diverse audiences; interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy; basic concepts of child/adolescent development and student welfare as they relate to athletics. ABILITY TO:

Plan, organize, and direct a comprehensive interscholastic athletic program across multiple schools; interpret, implement, and train others in KHSAA bylaws, district policies, and procedures related to athletics; administer school activity funds in compliance with Kentucky Redbook procedures (Accounting Procedures for Kentucky School Activity Funds, 702 KAR 3:130); provide effective leadership, supervision, and support to coaches and athletic staff; analyze data and reports related to participation, eligibility, finances, and equity, and make informed recommendations; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with administrators, staff, students, parents, officials, and community organizations; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; work independently with minimal direction, prioritize tasks, and meet timelines; make sound decisions in high-pressure or emergency situations.

Education and Experience

Any combination equivalent to: High school diploma or GED certificate; A minimum of 64 semester hours from an accredited college or university; Successful experience in athletic administration, coaching, or school leadership; Prior experience as an athletic director or assistant athletic director preferred.

Licenses and Other Requirements

Satisfactory criminal records check and any other background checks required by statute and Board policy; Current certification in First Aid and CPR, and completion of other required safety trainings as specified by the district and KHSAA; Completion of all district- and state-mandated trainings (e.g., child abuse/neglect reporting, bullying/hazing, suicide prevention, confidentiality, bloodborne pathogens) within required timelines; Valid Kentucky driver’s license; Completion or willingness to complete approved athletic director/activities director professional learning (e.g., KHSAA/NFHS/NIAAA coursework) within a specified time frame, as determined by the district.
