Overview GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the Park Superintendent and Lead Ranger, this position performs complex (journey-level) building maintenance and construction work including all phases in the daily operation and maintenance of park facilities, grounds and equipment for Lake Whitney State Park. Operates all types of equipment such as trucks, tractors, mowers, hand tools and power tools. Provides quality visitor services by issuing permits, collecting revenue, providing information. Serves as the Additional Duty Safety Officer (ADSO). Assists in enforcing park rules and regulations, performs resource management tasks and interprets the park’s natural resources. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Comply with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

Responsibilities

Perform complex (journey-level) building maintenance and construction work for park facilities, grounds and equipment.

Operate equipment including trucks, tractors, mowers, hand tools and power tools.

Provide quality visitor services by issuing permits, collecting revenue and providing information.

Serve as the Additional Duty Safety Officer (ADSO) and assist in enforcing park rules and regulations.

Perform resource management tasks and interpret the park’s natural resources.

Work under general supervision with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment; perform additional duties as assigned.

Comply with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduation from High School or GED.

Experience: Three years of facility, equipment or grounds maintenance experience.

Licensure: Possess a valid State driver’s license at the time of hire.

Substitutions: Thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of the required experience, with a maximum substitution of two years.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in customer service, outdoor education and/or public relations.

Experience in implementing a safety program or SORM ADSO training.

Experience working with volunteers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of general facility, equipment and grounds maintenance; basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, masonry, janitorial and mechanical maintenance and repair tasks.

Knowledge of accounting and revenue accountability for collections.

Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook; effective verbal and written communication; and standard office equipment.

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships; operating hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other equipment.

Ability to handle cash accurately and work independently or as part of a team.

Ability to perform manual labor (lifting up to 50 lbs) and conduct work in accordance with TPWD safety program.

Working Conditions

Required to work in a public park with overnight camping and day use.

Variable work hours, including times outside 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and days off other than weekends/holidays.

Respond to emergencies and on-call situations; travel up to 5% with possible overnight stays.

Required to operate a state vehicle and conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards; non-smoking environment in state buildings and vehicles.
