Are you an experienced Steel Estimator looking for a new opportunity? P & M Steel is a premier provider of structural steel and miscellaneous metal solutions, committed to quality, safety, and innovative design. We are seeking an experienced Structural Steel/Miscellaneous Metal Estimator to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in estimating for both structural steel and miscellaneous metal projects, along with a keen attention to detail and the ability to deliver accurate and competitive bids.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates for structural steel projects. This role plays a key part in driving project success from initial bid through project handoff.
The Estimator works closely with sales, operations, and detailing to ensure projects are clearly defined, properly priced, and set up for success.
Estimating & Bidding
Perform detailed takeoffs from structural and architectural drawings
Develop material, labor, and subcontract cost estimates
Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor pricing
Prepare and submit competitive proposals
Identify scope gaps, risks, and value engineering opportunities
Track bid results and improve estimating accuracy and win rate
Sales & Relationships
Build and maintain relationships with contractors and trade partners
Follow up on bids to understand results and market conditions
Support business development efforts and expand customer base
Project Coordination
Communicate scope, changes, and updates to detailing and operations
Price and process change orders in a timely manner
Assist in resolving project issues, discrepancies, and scope questions
Support projects from bid through completion
Internal Coordination
Work closely with production regarding schedule, capacity, and efficiency
Coordinate with administration on contracts, billing, and requirements
Maintain accurate records of bids, pipeline activity, and results
Assist with inside sales, walk-ins, and customer support when needed
Communicate clearly with customers, vendors, engineers, and team members
Job Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent, required
2+ years of experience in construction, steel, or estimating, preferred
Ability to read and interpret construction documents including drawings and specifications
Understanding of structural steel and AISC standards, preferred
Strong attention to detail and time management skills
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Education High school diploma or equivalent, required

Working Conditions This position operates primarily in an office environment with occasional exposure to the shop and fabrication areas. Standard office equipment is used regularly.
Physical Requirements The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers for typing and handling documents. The employee may occasionally be required to stand, walk, and move throughout the office and shop environment.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
Schedule Monday through Friday, standard business hours. Overtime as needed.
