Mobile Phlebotomist

Overview The Mobile Phlebotomist, under the general supervision of the Phlebotomy Supervisor, provides clinical pre-analytical laboratory services to clients/patients in a mobile setting. They are responsible for completing assigned routes in a safe and timely manner and must follow all policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Drive vehicle to client facilities (typically nursing homes) as directed by the company dispatcher.

Unload phlebotomy tray, bring it to the patient’s bedside, and collect samples ordered by the physician.

Identify patients accurately before collecting specimens.

Collect, label, process, and deliver specimens obtained from patients.

Reload equipment and all necessary specimens to the vehicle for prompt delivery.

Regularly communicate with the dispatcher to report status and location; create required records per instructions.

Maintain strict adherence to Universal Precautions to control blood-borne pathogens and infectious disease exposures.

Maintain required certifications, health requirements, and operational requirements.

Keep work area clean and follow all safety precautions at all times.

Report unsafe conditions and any complaints or problems encountered.

Monitor supplies inventory and report low stock or out-of-stock situations.

Identify and segregate expired supplies; ensure proper handling.

Report to work promptly, be properly groomed, and wear proper identification when visiting facilities.

Accurately maintain time records of hours worked and deliver as directed.

Manage assigned shift to include meal breaks.

Follow all specimen preservation, patient preparation, and specimen management processes without deviation; use only approved current documents.

Make changes to records only per approved instructions; on-call evenings and weekends may be required as needed based on workload or absenteeism.

Required Skills

Excellent communication and interaction skills specific to the population served (pediatric and geriatric).

Respectful, dignified, and discreet customer/patient interactions; acknowledge residents’ rights and patients’ right to refuse.

Regular attendance.

Current, valid State phlebotomy license (if required).

Current, valid State Driver’s license; car insurance; good driving record; vehicle in good working condition for daily driving.

Proficient in venipuncture and skin puncture using vacutainer and syringe techniques.

Knowledge of laboratory operations.

Maintain sterile, sanitary conditions to prevent contamination.

The standard medical laboratory environment includes health hazards; staff must operate safely in accordance with health and safety policies and procedures, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment.
