INTERIOR DESIGNER Long Beach, CA, US

PURPOSE The Interior Designer will work with the Engineering Service Planning Section under the interior design section, reporting to the VA Supervisory Interior Designer. The role is responsible for developing deadlines, objectives, and resources to complete assignments, planning and carrying out tasks to meet the interior design section’s objectives, overseeing major project activations, moves, space planning, budgeting, and preparing packages for furniture, finishes, and equipment purchases. The work is managed by the Supervisory Interior Designer for effectiveness in meeting all requirements.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INTERIOR DESIGN SERVICES: The Interior Designer will independently create and execute appropriate design services for varied spaces including offices, conference rooms, patient care exam rooms, treatment rooms, waiting rooms, entry lobbies, break rooms, support rooms, housekeeping aid closets, storage, and stock rooms throughout all major construction projects. The role involves managing and administering services related to the operation and safety of Federal facilities, designing interior environments to promote employee productivity, health and welfare, and overseeing the procurement and installation of solutions. The Designer must be highly proficient in preparing detailed AutoCAD designs, plans, sketches, color schemes, and visual aids for proposed design presentations. They will analyze architectural drawings, develop AutoCAD Furniture, Fixture & Equipment (FF&E) plan layers, interpret and review plans for concurrence with the VA’s Technical Information Library (TIL), standards, and specifications. The Designer will produce procurement packages following VA contracting standards, including SOW, technical specifications, attachments, drawings, independent government cost estimates, bid sheets and budgets. They will maintain the Interior Design Resource Library, assist in the management of all orders for activation, oversee installations, and review wayfinding signage, furniture, and artwork installation plans. The role also includes creating punch lists, coordinating with vendors and installation crews to complete punch list items, following design and accessibility standards, and coordinating with stakeholders such as Contracting, Logistics, EMS, IT, Material Management, end‑users, and engineering to develop and maintain activation schedules and reporting.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Familiarity with patient‑centered care culture in healthcare; ability to review and interpret blueprints and specifications.

Skilled in free‑form drawing and drawing to scale when on a job site measuring for a project.

Preferred certifications such as National Council for Interior Design Qualification, Project Management Certification, Evidenced‑Based Design Accreditation and Certification, and/or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

Expertise in recommending the selection, specification, procurement, and placement of furnishings.

Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint & Outlook) is required.

Microsoft Project & Revit are beneficial but not required. Must be able to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally with a variety of contractors, management officials, vendors, contract officers, and Long Beach staff.
