Job Overview
Traffic Designer III - District Four / Transportation Development / Highway Design / Traffic Design. This position will develop and prepare detailed component plans and specifications for signing and pavement markings, signalization, and lighting plans, utilizing computer aided drafting and design (CADD). This position will also prepare highway signing and pavement marking, signaling, and lighting component plans.
Responsibilities
Develops and prepares detailed component plans and specifications for signing and pavement markings, signalization, and lighting plans using CADD.
Design of signal head assemblies, railroad preemptions, signal system layouts, No Passing Zone Studies, Intelligent Transportation Systems, and overhead and ground-mounted signs with utility conflict reports.
Prepares highway signing and pavement marking, signalization, and lighting component plans using current Department software, standards, and criteria.
Performs Quality Assurance/Control reviews, ensuring plans comply with design criteria, policy, and procedures.
Coordinates major activities for designing traffic control devices, traffic signal systems, and lighting systems.
Acquires necessary information to select economically feasible solutions, identifies problems, provides solutions.
Obtains input from municipalities and governmental agencies on local requirements and ordinances.
Assists in project management, field reviews, data collection, Local Agency Program (LAP) reviews, customer service requests, existing location of traffic control devices, conflict determination and report preparation.
Assists in developing and updating project schedules with minimal supervision.
Provides training to designers on signing, pavement marking, signaling, lighting, overhead guide signs, ground‑mounted signs, Traffic Management Sites, and multi‑post signs.
Assists supervisor concerning design related issues.
Provides technical expertise in the design group.
Guides and directs junior designers on engineering assignments, criteria evaluation, scope development, and estimate creation.
Reviews shop drawings thoroughly and maintains shop drawing files.
Serves on Technical Review Committee (TRC) and Technical Advisory Group (TAG).
Assists in scope of services and staff hour negotiations.
Qualifications
Knowledge of highway design concepts, design principles, analytical techniques, CADD tools, project engineering, scheduling, and design standards.
Skill in engineering process for production of highway construction plans, use of manual on uniform traffic control devices, verbal and written communication, and managing multiple assignments.
Ability to establish internal/external relationships, apply engineering quantitative techniques, solve engineering problems, use PC, and train designers.
High school diploma or equivalent plus two years continuous employment; post‑secondary education may substitute.
