Conversational Designer

Hello Patient, Austin, TX, United States

About The Role

Hello Patient is hiring a Conversational Designer to shape how our AI agents communicate with patients in real, high-stakes conversations.

This role sits at the intersection of product, behavior, and language. You won't be building flows from scratch — you'll be iterating on and improving existing agent behaviors to make them more effective, more reliable, and more human in real-world conditions. Our agents have seconds to build trust, handle objections, and complete tasks without human intervention.

You’ll work closely with Product and Engineering team members to evaluate how conversations perform in production and identify opportunities to improve outcomes — driving measurable impact on containment rate, task completion, and overall patient experience.

We’re looking for sharp, curious thinkers who are deeply interested in human behavior and energized by solving complex, ambiguous problems through iteration. If you think in systems and care about how AI actually performs in the real world, this role is for you!

What You’ll Do

Design AI Behavior in Real Conversations

Define how agents respond across real-world scenarios (frustration, urgency, confusion, resistance)

Design conversations that balance empathy, efficiency, and task completion

Help agents establish trust fast and guide users toward successful outcomes

Improve Performance & Outcomes

Analyze real interaction data to identify drop-off points and areas for improvement

Optimize for containment rate — resolving conversations without human intervention

Iterate quickly based on production metrics and qualitative conversation review

Build & Refine Prompting Systems

Write and test structured prompts that shape agent behavior and tone

Partner with Product and Engineering to integrate conversational logic into the product

Develop reusable frameworks that scale across conversation types and use cases

What We’re Looking For Must have

2+ years in a relevant role — conversation design, UX writing, prompt engineering, linguistics, behavioral research, or similar

Exceptional critical thinking and problem-solving skills

Strong ability to understand and model human behavior

Experience with structured thinking (prompts, logic, systems, or frameworks)

High curiosity and willingness to challenge assumptions

Preferred

Background in linguistics, psychology, philosophy, or a field that trained you to think rigorously about language and behavior

Experience with AI products, chatbots, LLMs, or prompt engineering

UX, conversation, or behavioral design experience

Comfortable in fast-paced, early-stage environments

Compensation Base salary:

$120,000–$160,000

Equity:

Meaningful ownership in a fast-growing healthtech startup
