Technical Designer - Sweaters & Knits

Role & Purpose

The Technical Designer partners closely with Design, Production and Merchandising teams to bring product concepts to life through precise fit, construction and technical execution. This role ensures garments meet brand standards from initial development through bulk production, contributing to product quality and overall business success. Key Responsibilities

Lead the technical development process for Women’s Knits/Sweaters from initial concept through bulk production (TOP). Collaborate with Design, Merchandising and Production teams to achieve intended fit, construction and aesthetic goals. Evaluate garments on live models, identify fit issues and provide actionable solutions. Create and maintain detailed technical packages, ensuring accuracy in specs, construction details and updates across categories. Manage sample tracking, fittings and approvals, ensuring all key milestones and deadlines (including bulk and photo approvals) are met. Communicate clearly with factory partners, providing detailed written feedback, technical sketches and visual references. Maintain organized technical records, sample history and documentation to support consistency and continuous improvement. Qualifications

Required: 5+ years of experience as a technical designer. Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Excel and Flex PLM. Deep understanding of yarn types, gauges, stitch formations and knit construction. Able to manage multiple styles across seasons in a fast‑paced environment. Strong knowledge of garment construction, patternmaking, grading, draping and technical sketching. Understanding of fabric properties and their impact on fit and performance. Experience managing fittings independently and driving the fit approval process. Strong organizational, communication and cross‑functional collaboration skills. Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design, Technical Design or a related field (or equivalent experience). Experience working with PLM systems. Familiarity with factory processes and machinery across domestic and international production. Knowledge of J. Crew brand standards and product expectations. Salary Range: $80,800 - $100,400.
