Mechanical Designer

Actalent, Coopersburg, PA, United States

Mechanical Designer This mid-level Mechanical Designer / Mechanical Design Technician role supports new product development and manufacturing activities for smart building technologies. The position combines approximately 70% CAD-based mechanical design work with 30% hands‑on laboratory and product testing, making it ideal for someone who enjoys both detailed design and practical engineering support. You will focus on creating and refining mechanical components and assemblies, supporting manufacturability, and contributing directly to testing, documentation, and iterative design improvements in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment.

Responsibilities

Create and modify detailed 3D CAD models and engineering drawings for mechanical components and assemblies, including plastic parts, sheet metal, and other mechanical elements.

Support the design of components and assemblies with a strong focus on design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA).

Assist in the design, refinement, and documentation of manufacturing and test tooling.

Collaborate closely with Mechanical Engineers and cross‑functional teams during new product development and product launch activities.

Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date engineering documentation and drawings throughout product development cycles.

Participate actively in mechanical and functional testing of products and sub‑assemblies.

Set up, execute, monitor, and break down test fixtures and laboratory equipment for engineering tests.

Execute test plans and procedures defined by the engineering teams, ensuring accurate and repeatable results.

Document test setups, procedures, results, and any deviations in a clear and organized manner.

Support prototyping builds, including assembly and rework, to validate design concepts and iterative improvements.

Communicate test findings, observations, and recommendations for design improvements back to design engineers in a timely and constructive way.

Provide hands‑on support during active manufacturing builds, helping to resolve mechanical and tooling‑related issues.

Assist engineering teams during tooling build, validation, and refinement phases for both standard and custom tooling solutions.

Support semi‑autonomous engineering teams responsible for developing and maintaining tooling, fixtures, and production equipment.

Contribute to a collaborative team culture by working closely with design, lab, and manufacturing personnel in a fast‑paced product development and ramp‑up environment.

Essential Skills

2+ years of relevant mechanical design or mechanical technician experience.

Strong CAD experience with 3D design tools, with preference for Creo; SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software is also acceptable.

Proven ability to produce accurate 3D models and detailed mechanical engineering drawings.

Hands‑on experience with mechanical testing, prototyping, or lab‑based engineering work.

Ability to execute engineering test plans and procedures and document results accurately and thoroughly.

Solid understanding of basic mechanical components, assemblies, and common manufacturing processes.

Practical mechanical aptitude, including familiarity with mechanical assembly and the use of standard shop and lab tools.

Effective communication skills to share test findings and collaborate with engineers and cross‑functional teams.

Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate engineering documentation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Associate’s degree (AS) in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field is preferred.

Equivalent hands‑on mechanical design or technician experience may be considered in place of a formal degree.

Experience working in a product development or manufacturing environment.

Familiarity with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) is a plus.

Exposure to AutoCAD is a nice‑to‑have.

Experience supporting tooling, fixtures, or production equipment in a manufacturing or lab setting.

Interest in smart building technology and new product development.

Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, collaborative team environment.

Work Environment This role is fully onsite and embedded within a primarily mechanical engineering‑focused team that collaborates closely with electrical and broader product development disciplines. The work is split between desk‑based CAD design and hands‑on lab and manufacturing support, offering a balance of computer work and physical interaction with prototypes, test fixtures, and production equipment. You will work in a fast‑paced environment with heavy involvement in new product development, product launches, and manufacturing ramp‑up activities. The setting includes access to CAD workstations (with tools such as Creo and potentially SolidWorks and AutoCAD), laboratory test equipment, and manufacturing tooling and fixtures. The team culture emphasizes collaboration, open communication, and iterative improvement. The position is structured as a long‑term opportunity and offers benefits such as paid time off (including 10 days of PTO and 8 paid holidays) and additional benefits under a fixed‑term contract arrangement. Dress expectations align with a professional engineering and lab environment, where you dress appropriately for both office work and safe participation in lab and manufacturing areas.
