
Director of Accounting (Richmond)

Our company is seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Accounting to lead the accounting function and ensure the integrity of financial reporting, compliance, internal controls, and month-end close activities. This leader will oversee daily accounting operations, manage a high-performing team, and partner cross-functionally to support business growth and financial objectives. The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting leader with strong technical expertise, a process improvement mindset, and proven experience managing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and oversee all core accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and account reconciliations
Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting
Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards and company policies
Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures
Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning in partnership with finance leadership
Coordinate annual audits and act as the primary point of contact for external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory agencies
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local reporting requirements
Analyze financial results, identify trends, and provide recommendations to improve performance and efficiency
Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff to build a strong and scalable team
Drive process improvements and system enhancements to increase accuracy, efficiency, and visibility across the accounting function
Partner with leadership on strategic initiatives, mergers and acquisitions support, and special projects as needed.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field
CPA strongly preferred
8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility
Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
Experience managing month-end and year-end close in a complex organization
Proven leadership skills with the ability to coach, develop, and retain talent
Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across departments and with executive leadership
Advanced proficiency with ERP systems and Microsoft Excel
Preferred Experience
Public accounting background
Experience in a multi-entity, high-growth, or private equity-backed environment
Exposure to system implementations, process automation, or business transformation initiatives
