Job Summary
The Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) - District Communications supports the Superintendent and district leadership by developing, coordinating, and implementing clear, consistent, and accessible internal and external communications. This role promotes a positive public image of Ashland School District, maintains a robust online presence, manages district web content, and highlights district programs, initiatives, and achievements. The TOSA fosters strong relationships with staff, families, and community partners and ensures that communication practices align with district values, policies, and equity commitments.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation.

Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive district communications strategy in collaboration with the Superintendent and district leadership.

Maintain and regularly update the district website, ensuring content accuracy, accessibility, and usability for students, families, staff, and the community.

Support school sites in the use of district approved web platforms, providing training, guidance, and feedback as needed.

Create, edit, and publish district communications including newsletters, announcements, press releases, talking points, and emergency notifications.

Manage district social media accounts; develop content that promotes district activities, student and staff achievements, and community engagement.

Monitor social media channels and web analytics to ensure high quality, responsive, and strategic communication efforts.

Ensure all communication materials meet accessibility, cultural responsiveness, and equity standards; following established clearance guidelines.

Capture and produce photos, videos, and stories that highlight district programs, initiatives, and events.

Provide communication support to district administrators, including message drafting and technical support for presentations, digital media, and constituent outreach.

Collaborate with staff across school sites to identify and elevate positive news and stories.

Maintain branding consistency and support staff in applying district communication guidelines.

Attend district and community events to gather communication materials and represent the district as requested.

Attend work regularly and punctually.

Adhere to and enforce all district and school board policies.

Annually complete all required trainings by the district established due date.

Supervisory Responsibilities
All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment. This position supervises athletic coaches, activity advisors, and designated classified staff.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: A minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Master's degree preferred. Previous, successful teaching experience preferred. Experience in communications, public relations, digital media, journalism, marketing, or related fields is highly desirable. Experience working with culturally diverse families and communities or otherwise demonstrated commitment to equity and strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with diverse populations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: A valid and current State of Oregon (or reciprocal state) Teaching License (TSPC-approved).

Interpersonal/Communication Skills: Works well with diverse populations of students and adults. Strong communication skills including listening, problem solving, and de-escalation. Remains open to others' ideas and contributing to building a positive work environment.

Interpersonal Skills: Strong verbal and written communication; values and ensures inclusion of all voices. Works well with diverse communities; focuses on resolving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening without interrupting; remains calm and open to others in tense or difficult situations. Strong presentation skills and ability to respond effectively to questions in one‑on‑one, small and large group situations.

Technology: General skills and knowledge of computer usage and the ability to learn, understand, and utilize various software systems related to communications, website management, and digital media. Experience with content management systems, social media platforms, and graphic design tools preferred.

Other Skills and Abilities: Effectively manage job tasks while working in an environment with frequent interruptions. Create a safe, orderly, positive school climate for students and staff.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with others including understanding and being understood. While much of the work will be completed in an office environment, the employee will need to move between buildings, visiting sites throughout the district. This position requires use of a variety of digital systems, software, and hardware. This position may require some travel outside the district.
