
Manager-Strategic Communications & Media

I. Job Summary
This position leads and executes external and internal communications to advance regional and corporate business objectives and brand goals in Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, and parts of Alaska, Idaho, and Montana. This position protects WM’s public image and supports business growth through positive visibility, strategic positioning, issue management, and relationship management. The work involves developing communication plans, talking points, multimedia materials, and activating tactics for communicating with stakeholders including media, elected officials, local government customers, residential customers, commercial customers, regulators, community organizations, and employees.
Under the direction of the Area Senior Manager for Strategic Engagement, this position is accountable for strategic positioning and messaging for issues relating to contract retention, customer service, compliance, permitting, and service continuity across all lines of business. Externally and internally, the position researches issues, risks, and opportunities to inform strategic positioning. Internally, the position is responsible for relationship management and coaching necessary to operate with alignment in a complex business environment and a highly regulated industry.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leads strategic positioning to advance regional and corporate business objectives and brand goals, advising leadership on objectives, tactics, and timing
Researches, writes, coordinates, and executes internal and external communication plans and message development, and multimedia materials
Writes and publishes a monthly area newsletter to drive WM’s values‑driven culture and employee engagement
Writes letters, articles, and talking points for external and internal audiences
Actively engages internally to understand the business and track risks and opportunities
Manages proactive media work and incoming media inquiries
Serves as the media point person on the area critical incident response team
Takes a lead role in the design and quality assurance for area communication tools and systems (area message matrix, official templates for PowerPoint and business letters, approved communication plans, photo and video libraries, etc.)
Takes a lead role in quality assurance for leadership communications as needed, providing attention to detail and expert proof‑ing skills
Operates with clarity and consistency in managing multiple queries, content streams, and projects simultaneously
May plan and assist with company events
May be responsible for creating and supporting external and internal communications regarding service continuity connected to weather or crisis management
III. Qualifications
A. Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree (accredited), or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and 4 years of relevant work experience
5 years of relevant work experience in a communications department or agency (in addition to education requirement)
B. Preferred Qualifications
5 years writing and strategic positioning experience in a public relations agency or a complex business environment

☒ Office: This job primarily operates in a professional office environment and routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copy machines, etc.
The expected base pay range for this position is $111,205 - $144,440 per year. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific salary offered to a successful candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s relevant experience, education, training, certifications, qualifications, and work location.
Employees will also receive discretionary time off, up to 80 hours of paid sick time per year and seven paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Additionally, the Company has a leave pay policy that provides for up to 4 weeks of paid leave in a rolling 12‑month period for qualifying leaves.
