Summary

Incumbent works independently and is responsible to the Invasive Cardiology MIT supervisor and the Chief - Cardiology Section. This position supports the clinical and administrative components of Cardiology testing.

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS‑4 and GS‑5 levels.
Licensure or Certification: Not required for this occupation, but strongly desirable at GS‑6 or above as evidence of essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.
English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2 – section D – paragraph 5a – this part.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: Medical Instrument (Cardiac Catheterization) GS‑9(a) Experience.
At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS‑8) and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.
This experience demonstrates possession of the knowledge required to provide all aspects of cardiac catheterization technician services.
Technical KSAs: Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. KSAs 1‑3 are appropriate for all positions at this level; KSAs 4 and 5 are used in accordance with assignment appropriateness.
Knowledge of complex examination and treatment procedures, training and supervision, performance improvement projects, and policy development for the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.
Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
Ability to manage and supervise employees.
Ability to provide staff development and training.
Certification: Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) is highly desirable.
Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable.

Duties

Performs special/invasive procedures and exams for patients within the cardiology section including cardiac catheterizations, percutaneous coronary interventions, coronary stent placement, coronary atherectomy, coronary flow evaluation, TAVR & valvuloplasty, fluoroscopic imaging, intravascular coronary ultrasound, ventriculography, electrophysiology testing, radiofrequency ablation, endomyocardial biopsy, temporary and permanent pacemaker implantation, automated cardioverter‑defibrillator implantation, Swan Ganz catheter placement, pericardiocentesis, tilt table testing, transesophageal testing, renal, carotid, iliac, visceral and peripheral angiography, venograms, and interventional radiography.
Supports duties of a Medical Instrument Technologist in the Cardiac Catheterization Suite and sometimes in the Operating Room during diagnostic cardiac catheterization, balloon angioplasty, electrophysiology studies, device implantation, ablation procedures, TAVR, and valvuloplasty.
May be required to perform these duties elsewhere in the hospital where such procedures are conducted.
Shares weekend and after‑hours on‑call responsibilities with other MITs for emergency and after‑hours procedures.
Must arrive within 30‑45 minutes of being called when on‑call.
Assists in advanced invasive testing and radiological imaging, including EP laboratory operations.
Sets up cath tray, manifolds, prepares patients, operates and maintains hemodynamic recording equipment, and coordinates diagnostic/intervention instruments.
Operates diagnostic and therapeutic equipment such as cardiac pressure transducers, thermodilution cardiac output computers, blood gas oximeters, oxygen consumption computers, fluoroscopic units, and various monitoring stations.
Performs invasive and non‑invasive cardiac testing procedures such as fluoroscopy, hemodynamic monitoring, ECG analysis, oxygen therapy, intravenous access, phlebotomy, blood pressure measurement, and hemodynamic data input.
Differentiates acceptable versus reportable rhythms, e.g., controlled atrial fibrillation rate versus a fast R‑to‑R interval requiring ICU or ER intervention.
Manages a range of equipment including video systems, CD/echo archiving systems, contrast media injectors, EKG recorders, intra‑aortic balloon pumps, intravascular ultrasound devices, flow wires, Rotablator, Dash monitors, EP stations, mapping units, oxygen equipment, suction devices, CD recorders, defibrillators (Life Pack), Bovie cautery, power injectors, TEE, and other cardiology tools.
Transfers patients between stretcher/wheelchair and radiographic table.
Prepares rooms, equipment, and materials for procedures and follows prescribed protocols.
